Chapter XVIII. Happiness does not wait

Trost District July 17th 7:45 am

"Tell me, Erwin, what happened in that prison," Levi put down the cup of tea and folded the papers into a neat pile. Erwin raised one of his thick eyebrows.

"What exactly do you mean?" He asked, straightening up in his chair, aware of Levi's nervousness as he still needed to do something with his hands.

"I found two wounds on her forearm. If I don't count some bruises, she looked fine, but I don't believe her words that nothing happened. She's acting weird,"

"Do you think she's acting weird because of something that happened in prison?" Levi sighed nervously at Erwin's question.

"I don't know if she's acting weird because I hardly find time for her or because of something else. I just know something happened there and I have a right to know what!" He raised his always calm voice and looked up at Erwin with steely eyes for the first time.

"Theia caused a disorder with her arrival in Mithras. She was imprisoned and tortured by a cadet from the military police, whom, as it turned out later, she knew. She is the woman responsible for your first injury during the expedition six years ago," Levi frowned in irritation but let Erwin continue with explanation. "After not being satisfied with Theia's answers about your location, she let the two cadets into the cell that Theia had injured during her arrival. They tried to rape her," Levi clenched his fists on the table. He knew it. But Erwin raised his hand to stop his doubts. "Theia defended herself perfectly and I think that one of them will never look at the woman again," but his words didn't calm Levi at all. His blood was boiling.

"Why are there hyenas among us who hurt others in such a terrible way? How many women have to experience this on a daily basis? Why..." his head hurt, while he was thinking about his own mother forcing to sell her own body, about his wife's feelings while experiencing this kind of shit again. He dug his nails into his palm but he has no right to judge. He lost control of himself once, too. He closed his eyes and got up from his chair.

"Are you leaving?" Erwin asked calmly.

"Yes. I have to go to Mitras to see the queen and be back by five," he put on his coat.

"You know what kind of day it is today," Erwin warned him, and with his left hand he pulled the documents that Levi was helping him fill out.

"I know," he adjusted his green military coat and reached into his pocket. "That's why I'm leaving now. I invited her to dinner and I bought flowers and fresh food to send her for lunch. I'll give her this tonight," he placed a wooden box on the table in front of Erwin, who reached for it and noticed how nervous Levi was so he couldn't even look at him. He carefully opened the box and found a folding knife there. The handle was beautifully decorated and covered with gold. "I never wanted to give her a weapon, but Theia is not a woman like others. She doesn't require any jewelry and expensive clothes. This knife is very discreet and can be easily hidden under clothes," he took the weapon out of the box and pressed the button, causing the blade to shoot out. Erwin smiled amusedly. His own name was engraved on the steel blade. "Levi".

"Just the thought of slitting one of those bastards' throats with this very blade fills me with satisfaction," he said coldly and put the knife back in the box.

"I can easily imagine her," Erwin's mischievous smile didn't fade. "Levi, thank you for loving my daughter," like once before, Levi didn't respond to his words. He put the box in his pocket and turned his back on him. "I give a lot of burden on your shoulder," Erwin said, just before leaving, to which Levi stood up.

"I finally understand your reasons for never wanting a woman in your position," Levi said seriously, looking at the door to which Erwin frowned. "I realized that I also have to make a decision, even if it is not easy. After completing the expedition to recapture the walls of Maria, you will receive my resignation, Erwin," he grabbed the handle to open the door, which he then closed behind him.
