Chapter XXI.

After two days of endless cleaning, everyone could sigh of relief and move into clean premises. Theia unpacked the last of the books in her new office and looked around. She never had so much space just for herself. The room contained a table, lots of storage space, a bookcase, a couch with two armchairs with a table, and a separate stove with dishes.

Next to it was a smaller bedroom with a large bed, a wardrobe and her own bathroom. She was almost determined to challenge all the hateful faces of the scouting unit because of this luxury. She sat down at the table and stroked its wooden, clean surface. Her gaze fell on the clock. It was almost time. She got up to go down the stairs to the hall, where her new unit was already waiting for her. Rico Brzenska, as her new assistant, approached her and handed over the documents for today's duties. She was a shorter girl, with short, light blond hair and glasses. Her nature was sharp, mistrustful but reliable and loyal. Just what Theia needed. They left the building together and headed straight to the walls, which they were supposed to take over today.

In front of the gate stood all the members of the military garrison in Shiganshina, which they saluted together.

"I wish you a beautiful day. My name is Theia Smith and from today I am taking over the command of Shiganshina District. I don't think your job will change much. Just carry it out as before with the addition of new members to the team. The old garrison base has been restored, so please take it as it is and you will find all the information and instructions there. I've got a new work schedule and guard changes coming up, but you'll find out about all that in right time. I hope we get along," Theia spoke seriously and the soldiers saluted her again. She turned to meet the unpleasant gaze of Commander Shadis, the leader of the. All the soldiers of the scout unit lined up and many people gathered around, wishing them good luck.

"Secure the gate and prepare to raise it," Theia ordered almost immediately.

"Thea! What are you doing here?" Ilse jumped off her horse and ran to her friend. Levi turned his head in surprise in the direction he heard her name come from. "You're not serious, you... you're the new management?!" Ilse shouted so that everyone could hear her. Theia rolled her eyes.

"Well, if anyone didn't know it yet, everyone is certainly informed now," she pointed out sarcastically.

"That's incredible. So, you hate the army so much, but you became the first captain among us!" She exclaimed again and Theia began to wonder why this particular person was her best friend. "It's great," she paused and smiled. "We'll be together again, like in the old days," Theia looked into her eyes in surprise. She smiled.

"Yes," she answered simply. They both said goodbye and she watched with her eyes as Ilse returned to her horse. Levi was sitting not far from her. He looked at her through the crowd. Commander Shadis began the beginning of the 33rd expedition behind the walls. During his speech, Theia allowed herself to be taken to the top of the walls, from where she gazed at the other side. Almost immediately, a cold wind hit her body. She checked with binoculars one more time to make sure there were no titans near the gate and allowed it to open. The entire scout unit set off in the direction of the open space belonging to the dominion of the titans. Theia turned in their direction, hoping from the bottom of her heart for their success. Two white birds flew past her body and continued to float carelessly through the blue sky. Even through that distance, she could feel Levi's gaze following her shrinking form on the walls. All day Theia felt an abnormal nervousness that prevented her from doing any more important work. She kept looking at the bell to announcing the return of the scouts.
