Chapter XLIII. Messenger of death

District Holst, March 22, 11:30 a.m. year 851

Levi stood still, pinched to the ground. He didn't hear the sound of explosions, not even shots. His entire mind was overshadowed only by the pool of bright red blood on the floor.

"Captain!" Disorientated, he turned his head to the broken window where a terrified Armin stood. "Staria returned to one of those flying machines," he shouted and took a breath. "She captured Sebastian and Asher!" He added and Levi's pupils widened in shock. He walked over to the window and Theia turned her head with the last of her strength.

"What?" She whispered, frightened, looking into the distance. She couldn't see well, but she noticed two bodies pinned to the wings of the flying machine even from a distance. Her stomach flipped and she gritted her teeth angrily as her vision blurred more and more.

"I'll wait for you, little one. If you can think of something you'd like to exchange them for. Of course, if they survive," Staria screamed just before using the ladder to get into the machine, which even Eren in his titan form couldn't reach. Sebastian and Asher, unconscious, were chained to wooden posts to the retreating machine.

"Captain, what are your orders?" Armin asked and Levi grabbed his swords with determination, placing one foot on the parapet as he peripherally noticed Theia's pale face. Her lips were chapped and her eyes were closed.

"Hey," he breathed out and pulled her hand towards him, but she didn't react at all. On the contrary, her fingers quickly cooled and Levi began to breathe faster. "Theia?" He addressed her as her hand slipped from his. He straightened up to notice a growing pool of blood nearing his feet. He felt like he was in one of his nightmares as he watched her motionless body with a deathly expression. "Theia?" He whispered, but he couldn't hear his own voice. His whole body was paralyzed by shock and he was unable to move.

"Levi..."

"Don't do this to me..."

"Levi!"

"Please don't leave me. Open your eyes,"

"Levi! Get the fuck back to your senses! I need you!" Very slowly he looked up to see Harald's dark eyes, who pushed a small bundle into his hands and forced Levi's hands to catch it. His disorientated gaze drifted down and his hearing returned as a high, childish scream reached his ears. His face came to life and he breathed for the first time, because he realized that he was holding his own child. It was crying. Loud and strong. The whole district had to hear it. He felt like his knees were betraying him and his hands were shaking because he wasn't sure how someone like him could even hold such a fragile little body without hurting it. His own emotions betrayed him again and he didn't realize how, but he saw tiny drops falling from his eyes onto the white sheet in which the baby was wrapped.

"Welcome little one, I'm your father," he whispered, but he couldn't enjoy this moment for long, because Harald returned to him again, with bloody clothes and a scalpel between his teeth. He pulled the baby from the confused Levi's hands to place it on his right forearm and forced him to sit back on the bed where he desperately looked at Theia.

"Do something," Levi whispered, devastated and let Harald use a scalpel to cut the fabric of Levi's short sleeve, which he rolled up to his shoulder.

"I'll save her," Harald answered confidently and pulled out a long, translucent tube from his briefcase, which he attached to a larger needle. "Since you both have underground mothers, you also have the same blood type. The first inhabitants of the island lived underground, so you both have blood type A. I will use your blood and move it into her body to replenish the one she lost during childbirth," Harald explained simply as he pulled out the needle protection with his teeth, which he directed to Levi's veins. Levi watched his every move. He had no idea what he was trying to do but he wasn't stupid enough not to realize that this was the only chance to save Theia from bleeding out.
