Military hospital, royal city of Mitras, May 12, 844
"I see you were lucky despite your stupidity," Levi turned with a frown to meet a smiling Sebastian. After three days in the hospital, Theia's doctors allowed her to take short walks in the garden. She carefully turned and smiled. Sebastian sat down on the bench in front of them and lit a cigarette.
"You've never smoked," Theia pointed out in surprise.
"It's been the only thing that's kept me sane all these months," he answered her, looking at the cigarette he held between his trembling fingers.
"I guess Lobov was a kind kidnapper when he supplied you with cigarettes," Levi muttered.
"Not Lobov, Theodor," Theia raised an eyebrow.
"I heard he blew everything up," Theia said in a serious voice.
"He wanted to make sure that no one would use it to kidnap people again," he leaned back on the bench and looked up at the sky, towards which a cloud of gray smoke was drifting.
"Many died there," Theia broke the silence.
"Don't you think it was a release for them? Where do you live Theia? Don't you realize that after that hell many of them had no reason to go on?" he wasn't looking at her.
"Who ever gave us the right to decide who dies and who lives?" She raised her voice.
"I can't believe that you are the one saying something like that to me. What's the number on that red folder next to your name in Pixis' office?" She stopped.
"As long as we live, we still have the opportunity to change something. That possibility disappears when we die..." Levi whispered and they both turned to look at him.
"So. Theodor was..." Theia stared into Sebastian's eyes.
"Theodor stayed with Lobov after he was fired from the military garrison. He had unlimited financial possibilities to create his weapons and various drugs that could be used to fight or to obtain new material for Lobo's business," he began and Theia shot him by sharp look. "Haven't you become a bit sensitive? If you hadn't protected that kid next to you, you could have gotten rid of him a long time ago. Yes, Theodor told me everything," he responded to Theia's surprised look. "I wonder what Pixis will say about your performance. You failed, because of personal motives," he continued sharply. "We could have gotten rid of him and it might not have turned out the way it did. So many dead. You've never messed up anything so much. Simon, Marcus and Bred,'
"Traitor," she interrupted, clenching her fists.
"He was one of us!" He frowned, clutching the rest of his cigarette angrily between his lips.
"But he betrayed!" Theia stood up, but Levi pulled her close, silently watching their conversation.
"I would like to see you in his place! He died because of you, because you sent Theodor in the wrong direction and he couldn't save him! The military police must have enjoyed his execution!" Theia was taken aback.
"What...?"
"Hey, that's enough. What did you do instead? You allowed yourself to be captured and taken care of like a child. We're not going to blame with shits each other after all," Levi said in a very calm voice, looking Sebastian straight in the eye.
"I'm sorry Sebastian. I couldn't save Marcus or his wife. I couldn't save Bred, or the elderly couple in the underground, or that boy, or my cadets, and many others. I couldn't save Simon," she looked at his face, which showed anger. He gritted his teeth.
"I didn't even expect something like that from you. You are nobody. With great anticipation and looking at the world like a small child that crawled out from under its mother's skirt," Theia pushed Levi behind her as he struggled to stand up from the bench. "Simon was a first class trained agent. The only one of us who made it all the way to captain with her own district. You don't even reach her heels with your skills and experience. And you're supposed to be her replacement? You are an ordinary, good-for-nothing nobody. I don't understand why she had to die. Why... Why... not you," he looked into her eyes. She saw incredible pain. "You should have died," Theia breathed, staring at the ground. Levi stood up from the bench.
