He put the book on his lap and rolled his eyes. He wondered in which part of that crazy woman's head could come up with such stupid ideas, and then whether she could live without that part of her brain. He looked into her eyes, which reminded him of sad puppy ones he had recently seen under the bridge leading over the canal.
"A tree..." came out of his mouth and he didn't even try to pretend to think about her suggestion.
"Yes! Holiday tree!" Hanje moved her glasses closer to her nose and with enthusiasm kept her eyes on the irritated Levi.
"You have many trees outside, I don't understand what..." he didn't even have time to look disgusted, after which Hanje jumped into his speech.
"I mean a tree! Another kind of tree, we would decorate it to make our being in the living room more pleasant,"
"That sounds like a complete waste of time," this time Levi managed to look annoyed. He turned to Erwin, who had been trying to avoid conversation until now. "Erwin?" He challenged him and the blond man raised his blue eyed gaze.
"I'm sorry Hanje, but nothing like that will happen," he finally said in a calm voice and returned to the lines of his book. Hanje found this sight of two men with books in their hands literally boring.
"Really? Doesn't that sound like a fun idea? Decorate our tree? A small, tiny tree?"
"What would you like to decorate it with?" Levi flipped a page in the book bored. Both were clearly oblivious to her effort, whatever it was.
"Well, to boost morale. I do not know! Candles?" She blurted out the first thing that came to mind.
"Candles," Levi repeated, raising his eyebrows in disbelief. "You want to decorate the living room with a burning tree,"
"That doesn't sound bad," Levi turned in Erwin's direction in horror.
"Burning tree?" Erwin shook his head.
"Decorating a tree to boost morale. Soldiers will be more willing to fight and dedicate their lives if they are pleased with the holiday spirit," Levi opened his mouth silently after Erwin's words.
"I really wonder sometimes what kind of fools I am living with," this time it was his words that no one listened to.
"Hanje, let's decorate the tree to boost morale!" Erwin commanded in a firm voice and Levi could only shake his head silently.
"Yuchuu!" Hanje immediately jumped to her feet and ran towards the exit, ready to carry out the order without delay. Both men thought that this had given them a few hours of peace, but they were jolted out of their thoughts by a noise coming from the main door. Levi put the book down in irritation and stood up to go check what was going on. To his great surprise, the guards, led by Hanje and the miserable Moblit, were dragging a more than two-meter tree from which snow and needles were falling. Levi clenched his fists at the sight, and if there wasn't a Thea walking in right behind them, he probably would have hung Hanje on that tree as the first of the decorations.
"What's going on here?" She asked, watching in amazement as the tree was leveled and secured into the wooden stand. Hanje enthusiastically coordinated everything.
"Hanje wants to decorate her tiny tree," Levi hissed, following every piece of needle that fell to the ground with his gaze.
"Tiny," Theia shook her head with a smile. "In Mitras, they do it every year. Families decorate the trees in their houses because of the holiday season. One big one always stands in the square," she stated, still smiling.
