Chapter XLII. Through the Smoke and Flames

"What the fuck is going on here?"

"Levi," Theia whispered through the pain and his sharp gaze shifted to her. He walked around a surprised Sebastian and Asher to kneel beside her. "How are you..."

"Armin noticed strange objects in the sky, so we hurried back," he put the swords back in place and with the utmost care pulled Theia into his arms, who closed her eyelids in distress. "Everything will be fine now. I'm with you," he whispered in her ear and turned with her towards the stairs. "Thanks, you two," he addressed Sebastian and Asher, who nodded.

"It's Staria and about sixty opponents," Sebastian informed Levi. "She probably wants your child. Take care of Theia, we'll hold her off," Levi's cold eyes moved to the broken window.

"The scouts have already started," the entire brigade jumped from the walls of Maria, which almost immediately began to occupy the district. Lightning cut through the sky and nearby buildings were devastated by Eren's titan, which brought one of the flying machines to the ground with one blow. He threw it into the stone walls and the subsequent explosion engulfed the city in flames. The propeller flew away and destroyed the nearby square. Levi retorted angrily. "That brat just made a mess again," he pulled Theia closer to him and walked towards the stairs, which he ran down to get her to the midwife as soon as possible. But Staria got to her room earlier, dragged the woman into the entrance hall and shot her in the head right in front of Levi's eyes. The woman's body bounced off the ground like a piece of soggy pastry and her brain spilled onto the floor. Levi immediately covered Theia's eyes and hid behind the wall with her as he sat her on his lap. He felt how wet her clothes were and knew that he had to do something soon because he would endanger not only the child but also her. She was breathing hard and clenching her teeth, not to catch attention with any pained moans. But another of the strong contractions came and she didn't know how to control herself. She forcefully bit into the shoulder of Levi, who was watching Staria, who fired a few more shots at the already dead body of the poor woman, just to draw attention to herself. Levi closed one eye painfully and pressed Theia's head against the shoulder she was biting to cover a moan.

"Levi!!! Where are you?? Are you hiding your sweet wife?" Staria shouted cheerfully and let her friends shoot around, destroying the entire room. The paintings fell to the ground along with the plaster, and Levi pressed against the wall in his arms, hiding the suffering Theia. "I came to take from you what you took from me! I'm already looking forward to cutting the baby out of her beautiful body!" She licked her lips hungrily, but Levi's face remained cold. Perhaps Staria thought she was provoking him, but her words had no effect on him. All he could think about was how to help Theia and his child. He had read many books about pregnancy and childbirth, but he didn't feel up to doing such a thing himself. After all, he cannot afford to endanger their lives with his inexperience. Theia finally loosened her grip on her teeth and let out a few heavy breaths, clutching his jacket tightly as she pulled him close.

"Harald," she whispered in his ear. Rage took over Levi's face.

"I won't let him touch you!"

"Is our pride seriously the priority right now?" She frowned and tilted her head back again to breathe through the rush of pain. Levi watched her suffering for a few seconds before finally looking away in frustration and returning his gaze to the front door through which he needed to move to the next building where the prison was located.

"Come on Levi! Finally, show yourself! I'll find your beloved anyway, and don't worry, I'll make sure to break your bond in a pretty painful way," screamed Staria in agony, and at that moment someone shot down a crystal chandelier from the ceiling, which fell to the floor. Glass shattered in all directions and poisoned arrows paralyzed the first of Staria's helpers. Hanje with Moblit and Nifa rushed into the building using their gear, making way for Levi, who didn't hesitate and immediately pulled Theia back into his arms.
