excuses.
something you had become so good at lately in the last few months from dating him. you two both kept it a secret, an agreed negotiation about the first few dates. you both wanted to make sure it was going to work out longer than a month before telling people, then having to tell them if you broke up.
"hey, ______, did you hear me?" dustin asked, snapping his fingers in front of your face. you snapped out of your gaze, refocusing back on the conversation in front of you as you shut your locker door. the two of you began walking down the hallway as the conversation proceeded.
"yeah, sorry, just distracted," you muttered, reshouldering your backpack.
dustin chuckled, your eyes briefly glancing at him.
"by who?" he said in a high pitched, annoying voice to get you to respond. you elbowed him, shaking your head.
"not by somebody, you shrimp," you said. "by something. i have a big math test my last period of the day and i'm worried about it. you know how i forget that two plus two is four consistently," you muttered the last part.
"you'll do fine, as you always do. you know you will," he responded as you nodded, looking over at him with a small smile before hearing the bell ring to get to the second to last period. your body was physically aching to be let out of the building, you wanted to see him so badly.
as people were filing into classrooms quickly, teachers mainly shooing them inside, you turned around realizing you had completely forgotten your textbook for the history class you had before math. you pushed your way through the small bundles of people before making it back to your locker and unlocking it, soon realizing the hectic sound of people had disappeared.
"shit," you muttered, shutting the locker door and nearly throwing your textbook at the person behind it. "jesus! you can't do that!"
he smiled back at you, taking the textbook from your hands as you stared back at him with a small smile on your lips.
"well who would have thought that my girlfriend would be ready to knock me out with a textbook," he responded to your remark as you shook your head at him, the smile still on your lips. "so, how about we leave early?" he suggested, opening up the textbook to a page you had marked, briefly meeting your eye contact to see what you thought about the idea.
"i really would, but i have a math test, munson," you replied, taking the textbook back from him. "and i'm late for class, as are you," you said, jabbing your pointer finger in his chest as he just smiled back at you.
"bold of you to assume that i'm going to my science class," he replied as you shook your head once more, turning heel to head to class but eddie grabbed your wrist and pulled you back to him. you wanted to give in so badly, you really, truly did. you didn't want to take the math test, to go to history, to sit there for two more hours and wait. but you knew you had to.
"just one time, _______. you never miss class," he persuaded.
your eyes looked up to his as you debated it internally, your body saying yes but your mind saying no.
you couldn't win this, not today. not with the way he was looking at you and his thumb gently rubbing over your wrist. you sighed, eddie perking up slightly.
"fine, you win, munson," you told him, going back over to your locker and unlocking it once more, putting away the textbook. he grabbed your hand swiftly after you were done and pulled you to the cafeteria where there was a door you could both go to in order to get out to the back with the track field that was set in front of the woods.
