"i'm telling you, she did not look at you, mike," dustin told him as the two walked into the cafeteria. this place was core for every conversation and where people were all forced to be in  the same room as each other. the two stood in line to get their food, still having the every day reoccuring conversation about the girl in his second period- you.

"i promise you, mike, she wasn't even looking at you. why would you think that?" dustin asked, the two of them finished getting food on their trays as they headed over to the  hellfire table. as they sat down, the conversations between jeff, gareth, and the other club member were heard while eddie read a magazine about dungeons and dragons.

"because i know it," he said. "i can feel her looking at me."

"even if she was, which i highly doubt, she is far too old for you, mike. she's a senior, you're a freshman," he reminded his friend as eddie looked at the two of them over the magazine he was holding before setting it down on the table and getting up to sit next to them.

"so, what senior is too old for mike wheeler?" eddie asked, chuckling a little bit as you walked past their table, talking to chrissy about something that she looked like she was struggling with. you two exited the room, you talking to her sympathetically.

"one in his second period class," dustin said, mike staring at the direction you had gone in.

"holy shit, wheeler," he said, standing up as he walked back over to the head of the table. mike and dustin exchanged a glance of panic before looking back over at their dungeon master.

"i'm sorry, what?" dustin said.

eddie chuckled to himself, gently kicking the wall with his shoe before walking back over to his table with his friends.

"you like a senior, mike?" the other member of hellfire questioned.

"yeah?" mike said, slightly confused as gareth laughed across from the two of them, shaking his head as he looked down towards the table top with the tray of half eaten food.

"a senior is far too old for you," jeff said.

at that point, you had walked back into the cafeteria without chrissy as you walked over to the hellfire table. mike's eyes followed you the entire time that you were traveling over where all the boys were sitting together. jeff and gareth were making up new rules for a card game whereas dustin was elbowing mike in the side to get him to stop.

as you approached, jeff smiled over at you while gareth did a brief handshake with you before you went over to eddie.

"can i talk to you?" you asked, looking up at him nervously. he nodded in response, grabbing his metal lunchbox before walking out of the backdoors of the cafeteria that you had led chrissy through.

"and how do you all know her?" mike asked.

"we've been going to school with her for years, wheeler," gareth replied as he took a bite of his food. mike looked back over at the direction that you and eddie had gone, confused as he nudged dustin. he looked at him in confusion.

"yes?"

"follow me," he muttered, dustin standing up with him as the two left out the same doors you both had previously exited through.

"i'm worried about her," you said, pacing back and forth through the hallway while eddie stared up at you from where he was sitting against the wall of your school. "i mean, she's sort of just shut herself off from me and she won't really tell me why except not to worry. but she was a mess today, eddie. like, she was just a total mess."
