SUDDEN SHOCK

you were in shock as you heard him tell you what you never wished to hear as soon as you two had made a commitment to each other. you felt the tears being held back in your throat as it felt like hot, barbed wire was wrapped around your neck to choke you in silence. 

"________, you know i'll always still care for you," he replied as you just stared blankly back at him. you felt like the last two years had gone to the waste as soon as she had walked into the school building and taken the one thing that you thought you had completely to yourself. 

"that doesn't really make it easier, you know," you forced out, the metaphorical wire tightening itself to shut you up. 

"i know, but you knew that this wasn't really going the direction we wanted it to anyways," he said gently, letting out a sigh as he smiled gently at you. "maybe now you can go off and actually achieve your dreams." 

you shook your head, walking away from him as you thought about everything you two had been through together. your heart began to sink heavily, to the lowest pit of your stomach, and you suddenly wanted to let it all out. 

but you had to wait, wait until you at least got into your car. 

you were pushing past people to get there as soon as you could, spotting your car parked closely to the left side of the building near the gymnasium. you rushed towards it, getting inside and slamming the door as you let your emotions take over fully. 

in the midst of your tears, you started the car and drove off to the one person you felt safe with now. the only person you could trust in this moment.

when you heard the little bell chime, your heart skipped a beat as you saw him sitting at the front counter playing with a slinky. 

"steve," you forced out, causing him to look up from what he was doing to see you standing there with tears rolling down your cheeks. he immediately walked out from behind the counter and took your hand in his as he led you towards the back where the office was. he got you inside, shutting the door behind the two of you. 

"what happened?" he asked gently. 

"eddie, he," you started, feeling your soul being flattened and crushed. "he broke up with me because of chrissy." 

"when did this happen?" he asked, gingerly reaching out and placing his hand on your shoulder as you sighed, trying to calm yourself down. 

"right after school let out," you muttered. "steve, i was with him for two years. two years and it's just over like that?" 

you were baffled, heartbroken, and angry all at once and you felt sick with the amount of emotions happening inside of you. steve sighed, pulling you into a hug as he held tightly onto you. he started to hum the chorus of your favorite song, calming you down slightly but you were still hurt. 

"what the hell am i supposed to do," you mumbled, closing your eyes as he held onto you. 

"you're supposed to show him that you are so much stronger than what you already show," he replied. "you are incredibly strong, _______. maybe you never saw it, but we all did. and this might be your time now to truly understand just how brave you are against the worst shit that can come your way." 

you nodded, letting out a shaky sigh. 

"i never liked you two together anyways," steve muttered as you let go slightly to look up at him. 

"this is such the wrong time, harrington," you said softly, the tone of upset and angry seeping into your voice. you were trying to control yourself, but steve understood how hard a breakup was- especially one that had a lot of time and commitment put into it. 

"i know, i know, but i have been wanting to tell you for a while, anyways," he replied as you shook your head. 

"i'm going to go home," you said, opening the door as you wiped your tears and walked out of the family video store. not only had you been broken up with, but you had one of your best friends telling you that he never liked the two of you together to begin with when you saw eddie as the love of your life. you gave him everything, all your trust, hopes, dreams, desires. 

everything.

you felt your heart sinking further into your body on your drive home, thinking about the different dreams that you and eddie had shared late nights at his trailer, the odd conversations that happened when one of you was either drunk or high, the sweet moments that happened privately between the two of you, the days in school that he would sneak up on you and grab you into a hug, the laughter he gave you, the love he gave you.

how had that all gone away so suddenly?
