Seonghwa found his mother outside at the bottom of the stairs to the apartment block, and the moment he laid eyes on her, he felt red hot anger well up inside of him.
'Why did you just attack my husband?' he asked deadpan, stepping down the last step and staring at the back of her as she turned to face him.
He was appalled when she scoffed.
'He started it.'
He could have laughed at the juvenile comeback and the absurdity of the comment. 'I somehow find that very hard to believe. What did you say to him?'
She rolled her eyes at him, and it was in that moment that he was reminded of the very reason he moved out at seventeen—she was a lovely woman when she was in a good mood, but her condescending belittling moments made him want to pull his hair out.
'I merely spoke the truth, unlike someone.'
And out come the true colours, he thought with a sharp breath. 'And what might that truth be?'
She seemed to let go of all inhibitions. 'Seonghwa open your eyes! You married a self-absorbed, asshole. That man up there doesn't care about you. He just wants to keep living easy while you do all the hard work for him! He abandoned you and forced you to look after his bastard child while he lived life like nothing had changed. He destroyed your marriage just weeks after the papers went through, and he couldn't even be bothered celebrating your union. He treated you like a secret to be kept, and still does to this day. He's arrogant and thinks he knows everything, and he's got you wrapped around his little finger! You never should have married him, and if you had any brains, you'd divorce him and get out while you still can.'
He'd never been so fucking angry in his life.
'How fucking dare you,' he growled, appalled by everything that he saw before him. 'That man up there, is my husband, and whether you like that or not, if you want to be in my life, you're going to have to get used to it. When I introduced him to you and dad, I did that hoping for your blessing, not your permission.'
'And we gave you both, but he met us once before he dragged your off to elope like drunk horny adolescents, with no respect for you or your family.'
He let out a harsh breath, feeling anger boiling inside of him. 'It just keeps coming back to the fucking wedding ceremony,' he breathed in disbelief. 'Hongjoong has been telling me for months that you have a problem with him, and I've been blindly telling him he's imagining it—not to worry about it—because I didn't think you could stoop so low as to shun the man I chose to spend my life with, because we didn't have a fancy fucking wedding or honeymoon.
Well you know what, mom? Not everyone needs, nor wants that. Hongjoong can't win in your eyes. You accuse him of abandoning his role as a father, when he did nothing but devote his time to providing for her, but then you say we should have wasted all out money on a ceremony and then fucked off for a week on a honeymoon and leave our daughter home alone—something I bet you would have then accused him for the same thing!'
