Tapping his pen idly against his textbook, Mingi's mind was a thousand miles from the content on the pages.
Friday morning, sun beaming in through their kitchen window...
Sitting with Yunho at their table with steaming mugs of fresh coffee...
A plate of golden toast between them to share...
He was curling his toes underneath Yunho's foot, staring into his coffee, lost deeply in thoughts of his father, just the day before...
He'd been so angry seeing him again, enraged by the betrayal and overwhelmed with so many emotions at once. He'd spent the entirety of his childhood and teenage years wishing his father would come back, but of all the times he could have decided to reach back out, why now? When he was self sufficient and finally trying to move on with his life without him.
He'd been so mad...
And then overnight, he'd been upset. Tired of simply feeling. He missed his mom, and he missed his family, and he missed the days where he'd not known his father was capable of disowning him. Missed the days where his love had been unconditional.
Now...? Now, he thought he just felt raw.
His head was clearer though. Yunho had been right to tell him not to think anything over... To let himself feel overnight.
It had given him time to let his emotions sink in, and with it he realised, he felt everything. Indeed, he was still angry. But he was still upset too. He was grieving and betrayed and confused and lost and lonely and relieved and guilty, and he felt all of those things with every piece of his being.
He was tired.
And he was raw.
'I'm not sure I want to see my dad again,' he said quietly—the first he'd spoken of it. Thinking back, letting Yunho come home to find him melting down in the shower probably hadn't been his best decision ever, but truth be told, he hadn't done it on purpose. Time had melted into one long strand, and in the corner of the shower, it had bent around him. It had felt like the world had frozen still.
Only it hadn't, and although Yunho wasn't bringing it up, he knew he'd scared him half to death.
He caught himself idly rubbing his wrist again and made a conscious effort to stop. He didn't want it to become a habit again, and he didn't want to think about the shameful moment he'd had yesterday in that convenience store, flinching as though he were a child about to be hit all over again, even though he was an adult now, and could defend himself.
He forced himself to hug his hands around his mug instead, trying hard to focus on the feeling of the warmth melting through his skin, and the hint of the rich scent he could smell through his blocked nose. Happy things, he told himself. His father had always made him tunnel visioned with nothing but his miserable life in his sights, and he refused to let it get the better of him.
