Sitting alone at the dining room table, Jae put his head in his hands, defeated.
Interrupted midway through his shower by the sound of something smashing in the living room, he'd gotten out and wrapped a towel around him just to check on his mother...
And found her seizing on the floor—a broken vase around her causing shards to cut into her skin.
An hour later, after looking after her, calling an ambulance and watching the paramedics take her away, what had been a chaotic time, was suddenly still and quiet. No one around, not even their broken clock ticking to fill the void.
He let out a heavy sigh. He knew how this would go. The hospital visit would make his mother's condition worse from the disorientation, somehow, his aunts would find out she wasn't home, and he would be bombarded with their bullshit as they all flocked to go sniffing around for money they didn't have.
'Fuck me,' he muttered, leaning back on his chair and raking his fingers through his hair. At least he'd already changed the locks. He could padlock the gate too, but that wouldn't get very far when their stingy-ass boyfriends and husbands would come with bolt cutters.
'I need a beer.'
Getting up and dragging himself over to the fridge, he huffed in irritation when he realised there were none left, and paying a glance at the cabinet where he knew there were more under the bench, he considered just drinking one warm...
'Alcoholic,' he muttered, rolling his eyes at himself and wandering back into the living room. He collapsed down on the couch and found his phone on the cushion, deciding to check the time.
It'd been almost half an hour since the paramedics had come and gone. He wondered how long it would take for his aunts to find out this time.
Flicking through his notifications, he saw the group chat had been active, mainly Sangwoo, Luna, Lee and Heejin's names popping up, however he didn't feel like reading through them. He cleared them instead, and felt a small, exhausted tug of just the corner of his lips as the miles of messages disappeared, leaving just one private message notification to replace the endless scroll—Luna's. Nothing but three little x's, a heart, and a smiley face, sent almost an hour ago on the dot.
I wonder how the hell she knows, he thought, flicking his phone screen off and laying back across the couch. Women and their intuitions... None of the guys had ever had it, but the entire time he'd known them all, Luna had always been the one who just somehow fucking knew things. Real life wizardry.
Closing his eyes, he let his mind drift away...
His new job... Boring as all hell but easy as shit...
Uni... Back when he was still a student... Sitting in classes, unable to focus... Worrying...
Making music and feeling great in the beginning, but slowly loosing his ability to write as his life outside became too much... Too overbearing...
