White sleeves pushed to his elbows, white coat across the back of the chair, Seonghwa stood by Dr. Han's desk, sorting through stacks of patient files he'd finished up with to pass over to him—a quiet silence of concentration between them as they worked. His mentor and colleague was seated at his desk flicking through his computer and comparing information to the files in his hands, and a deep line of focus was drawn between his greyed eyebrows.
It was hard to believe today was his last day before going on extended parental leave. It felt almost bittersweet, and in a way, he felt guilt wash over him as he suddenly understood acutely how Hongjoong had felt about leaving work, nearly a year ago. He was leaving behind something he loved, without guarantee he would be able to return to this very place.
It almost felt like a thousand years ago that he'd been just a newbie here, terrified of this place and the man behind that desk, and yet at the same time, it felt like just yesterday. He'd had zero confidence in himself and he'd been positive Han Saem had hated him. He'd been terrified of making decisions, and uber conscious of everything he did around his mentor.
But years later, although he was still new in the grand scheme of things and was more than aware of how much he had yet to learn, it felt as though he'd finally settled in. He supposed if he'd learned anything, it was that growth really did come when you couldn't see it happening.
Hindsight, and all that...
'My my~ Such concentration going on in here~' interrupted a playful voice suddenly, distracting them both and causing them both to look up. Not that he needed to see them to know who it was though. 'I could feel it from all the way down the hall!'
'Dear lord, boy, what have you done with your hair?' Han Saem groaned with a heavy sigh.
Smirking, he turned to lean against the desk as he laid eyes on his husband, fairy floss hair all fluffy and looking like candy to go with his amused, teasing smile.
Hongjoong leant against the door frame, papers in hand as he crossed his arms over his chest. 'Okay, I'm sensing a little jealousy,' he taunted, nodding as though in agreement with himself as steam nearly threatened to erupt from his mentor's ears. 'I happen to know a good hairdresser who could set you up with some nice bubblegum pink highlights? He's a family friend too, so mates rates, of course~' He grinned innocently.
And Han Saem snorted, leaning back in his chair and letting out a deep breath, letting work wash away with it. 'Mates rates, you say?'
Hongjoong's eyebrows shot up. 'Interested, are we?'
Dr. Han laughed openly. 'You can dye my hair when I'm dead, and not a day before, boy.'
Hongjoong snorted, wandering into the office with that calm, relaxed demeanour of his, and as he came closer, when he glanced over the desk with his head bowed slightly, Seonghwa spotted a crimson red glittering Mickey Mouse hair pin amongst his hair, and it made his heart throb in both love, and nostalgia.
