“You’re in control, Cyris,” I told him. “What do you want to talk about?”
He sat down on the couch, and I sat down next to him.
“How bad did I hurt you?”
“When? Last night?” I asked. He nodded so I continued. “It was painful… It hurt a lot. I think…I think my whole body ached after it happened. I was…I was really weak and a bit dehydrated.” Recalling that experience hurt, but I knew we needed to talk about it.
I could tell he was uncomfortable hearing my response, and he wouldn’t look at me.
“I promise you, that will never happen again,” he stated.
Cyris’ vow was all too familiar to me. It made me think that he was doing what I’d been doing my whole life. Shutting people out and refusing to feel.
“Are you going to shut me out?” I asked suddenly, the words left my lips before I could think twice and I mentally kicked myself for it.
He didn’t answer at first, and I felt a pain in my heart. But then he stirred and laid halfway on the couch. He motioned for me to join him and my body seemed to move before I willed it to. I laid my head on his chest, and he covered us up with his blanket.
“I will not shut you out. It’s just hard to say it out loud… I’m so sorry for everything I’ve done. For lying to you, for hurting you in so many ways. I know you don’t trust me right now, but I never stopped trusting you. And if you say that you’ll stay with me, and help me learn to calm myself down when I get out of control, then I believe you.” Cyris’ voice was quiet but confident.
“I’ll stay with you, but, love, you can always talk to me. No matter what.”
“I know... I love you Vasia,” he whispered.
“I love you too, Dewdrop,” I replied softly. “Do you… Can I…Can I hold you? You just…back there it seemed like you were in a lot of pain.” Seeing Cyris so scared had hurt me and it reminded me of my own fears.
“Of course you can hold me... I’m only afraid of hurting you when I get out of control.”
I wrapped my arms around him and spoke softly, trying to bring him some comfort. “Do you remember what I said after I kissed you for the first time?” I asked.
“Yes...that you could have killed me all because you wanted a kiss.” he quoted. I bit my lip and nodded.
“You didn’t let me go then. You didn’t let me break down in fear despite the fact that I froze your arm. You weren’t scared of me. You held me in your arms and asked for a kiss,” I told him. “So I’m not going to let you go now. Drowning…dehydration…death…whatever else your magic can do…I’m not scared. You weren’t scared of me then, why would I be scared of you now?”
He was speechless, but after a moment he held me closer.
“What can I do, Cyris?” I asked. “Tell me what you need from me.”
