I sat in the Council chamber the next day for the first meeting of my reign. I had wanted to bring Rosanna with me, but she thought it was better for her to ease into her role. She wanted to read up on Esporian history and learn a little more about our home. That fact warmed my heart, but it also left me sitting in a chamber full of Lords without her. At least Ren was here.
The Council chamber was a large room with a long table. I sat at the head of the table and my Lord Chancellor would sit on one side of me, while the General sat on the other. The remaining three seats were taken up by the Lords of the Council.
"For my first order of business, I'd like to announce that I'm promoting Ren Varley from his current position as Lieutenant General to General of the Esporian Forces," I declared. Ren looked surprised. "The future Queen and I would not have been able to take back Espor without you. Furthermore, you protected the future Queen and my unborn child during the attack, something that I will be eternally grateful for," I told Ren. "Do you accept your new position, Lieutenant General?"
"I'm honoured, Your Majesty," he told me. "I accept."
I gestured to the seat next to me and Ren sat down. The General had a seat on the Council to provide military insight when needed.
"Speaking of business, I believe we need to discuss the future Queen of Espor," Lord Pallis stated. All these Lords had served on my father's Council.
I knew this was coming, and yet the frustration wasn't any less intense.
"Discuss her?" I inquired. "What exactly do you mean?"
"Lord Byron has told us that you seek to make a Riofaltan Princess the Queen of Espor. Is that correct?" Lord Elric asked.
I glanced at Byron, who only stared back silently.
"Did he, now?"
"Your Majesty...forgive me for saying this, but your choice to make Rosanna Aster your Queen has us all a bit...concerned..." Lord Pallis admitted.
"Why is the Council concerned with my choices?"
"She's a Riofaltan!" Lord Byron protested. "She doesn't know our traditions or customs. She doesn't even speak Piarari!"
"There are many eligible Esporian ladies for you to choose from," Lord Elric added.
I nodded politely, hearing what the Lords were saying, but not listening. There was nothing they could say that would ever change my mind.
"You are right, Lord Elric," I said. "But I've already chosen a wife..."
"You chose an ice witch! A girl from a fallen family! The Asters have nothing! She doesn't have any wealth or connections or anything of value to bring to Espor or the Castellan household!" Lord Byron growled.
I could see Ren tense up from the corner of my eye, clearly annoyed with what the Lords were saying. I couldn't blame him, I was starting to feel my own anger rise.
"There are only two Asters left from what I've heard. Princess Rosanna and her older brother, Crown Prince Kian," Lord Elric stated. "Their bloodline has nearly died out."
