"That depends on who's asking," I replied as Cyris and I stood face to face with the mysterious man. The man's eyes were glowing icy blue and I knew he was summoning his ice magic. He attacked without warning, not giving me enough time to send up a shield, so Cyris and I had to dodge. We moved together, both of us doing our own hand signs to create our attacks.
"So you both are magic users as well?" he asked.
"Like I said, it depends on who's asking," I growled.
"This battle will end quickly... I'll take out the water boy first."
My eyes flashed silver as I let a blizzard swirl around us. My fury over his threat made my magic surge. No one...no one threatened Cyris. Not while I was around. I lifted my hands and sent a barrage of icicles his way. He tried blasting them, but that's exactly what I wanted. He hit one and two more appeared.
"Ah, I see...this one must be your lover," the man taunted as he dodged my icicles. They hit the trees behind him.
I hate to admit it, but he was just as good as I was! He kept up with every move I had. But he didn't have a battle partner to draw from. I borrowed some of Cyris' strength and formed a hailstorm around the mysterious man, hurling massive pieces of hail at him as I did. After a few moments, I thought Cyris and I had won, but suddenly the storm burst, sending hail towards Cyris and me, and throwing us backward. I managed to land on my feet, but Cyris slammed into a tree.
The man summoned a dragon made of ice and it roared before charging at Cyris. I rushed over to him and clapped my hands together. We all watched as the dragon shattered into a million pieces. The mysterious man looked at me in shock.
"Who are you?" he asked breathlessly.
"I could ask you the same question!" I countered, trying to catch my breath.
"I asked you first!"
"You won't get any answers unless you give some!"
"I don't think you're in any position to be making demands!" the mysterious man retorted.
"Last time I checked, there were two of us and one of you!" I challenged.
"Enough games! All of the ice magic users are either in Wintervale's prisons or dead, so who are you?!" he roared.
I could give him a fake name, but I knew that he'd probably catch my lie. My emotions were too strong at the moment for me to lie effectively. So I told the truth.
"Rosanna..." I replied. "Rosanna Aster."
The man seemed to become hesitant with his actions, and he was rendered speechless for several seconds.
"Liar!" he yelled angrily.
"Who are you to call me a liar?!" I demanded. I held up my locket. "Ilaria and Marco Aster were my parents! This was given to me the day I was born! Who the hell do you think you are?!"
He threw an icicle at me and I wasn't ready, I thought for sure it would pierce my stomach and I froze in fear. But Cyris stepped in front of me with this arm held out, and he managed to melt the ice mid-air. I could tell he was beyond angry, as water began to circle around him. Relief washed over me, I touched my belly and cradled it protectively, feeling the soft aura of my child. They were okay and knowing that brought some peace to my mind.
"She's not a liar," Cyris voiced evenly.
"I'll ask you again," I told the mysterious man. "Who the hell do you think you are?! What gives you the right to call me a liar?! I'm a Riofaltan Princess and I think I deserve a little more respect than that!"
"It...can't be true! It's impossible!" the man shouted.
"She is the rightful heir to the Riofaltan throne. The seat in Wintervale belongs to her...! You're very strong, I'll give you that, but don't make the mistake of thinking you're stronger than us. If you threaten her again, I will end you..." Cyris said firmly.
The man fell to his knees, and a gust of frost emitted from him as he hit the ground. Ice began to crawl up the trees and the temperature dropped more.
"Who are you?" I asked for the third time, my voice more shaky.
The man put his face in his hands, then glanced up at us after a few moments.
"I'm Kian... K-Kian Aster."
I'm sure the colour drained from my face because my throat was dry, and my heart stopped beating. He lowered the hood of his hoodie and revealed a head of brown hair. Once his hood was down, I noticed the green eyes that shockingly resembled my own. My knees buckled as I recalled his name from my visions and dreams. It couldn't be him...he'd been murdered along with the others that day...hadn't he? Then again...Felix had never found his body. It was possible...but still, why hadn't he come for me? Why had he left me to fend for myself?
"My br-brother?!" I choked out. I felt a familiar set of strong arms wrap around me as tears welled up in my eyes. I started sobbing as Cyris held me.
Kian approached Cyris and me, but Cyris let go of me and shifted so that I was behind him. He held out his arm so that his hand was against Kian's chest.
"You have her proof, where's yours?" Cyris interrogated.
Kian pulled a pendant out from underneath his shirt, and held it up for Cyris and me to see. It was a falcon with his name and birthday engraved on the back.
"You want more proof?" he asked before rolling up his right sleeve, revealing the tattoos on his forearm, the runes of ice and Riofaltan royalty.
I sobbed even more. Gods...my brother...my brother was alive. I didn't need more proof, I threw myself into Kian's arms and he hugged me back without hesitation.
"Rosanna...I thought you were lost with the rest of our family...I thought...I'd never see you again," Kian sobbed into my hair.
I held him tighter. My brother was here...he wasn't lost to me...he was alive...I wasn't the last Aster after all!
