I walked down to the foyer the next afternoon. Cyris was leaving for Riofalt today and I wanted to see him off. I made my way down the stairs and spotted my husband standing near the door with Ren and some guards. His hair was neat and he'd been keeping it a bit shorter since becoming King, it was at his ears now. Then I noticed what Cyris was wearing and my breath caught in my throat. He was wearing my father's dark blue hooded cloak. The silver falcon clasp shone in the sunlight pouring in through the windows. My eyes glistened as I looked at him. He looked good...he looked like a warrior. Correction...he was a warrior. I reached the bottom of the staircase and Cyris noticed me standing there. He looked at me and I knew he was as torn up about this as I was.
"Ren, take the guards outside, I'll join you shortly," Cyris told his cousin without taking his eyes off me. I saw Ren nod out of the corner of my eye and he and the guards went out the front door. Cyris strode over to me and wrapped his arms around me.
"Cyris...you...you're wearing my father's cloak..." I whispered in shock.
"Your father wore this cloak when he went into battle and I'm going into battle, Rose..." he reminded me softly.
I let out a shaky breath. I'd been the one to push for him to go, but that didn't mean that I wasn't terrified of something bad happening to him.
"I...I want to go with you, but I can't... I'm further along now and my strength isn't the same as it was before. I'd be a liability rather than an asset. Besides...someone has to watch over Espor," I told him.
"I know, and I wish you could come, but it's too big of a risk now," he agreed as he rested a hand on my stomach.
"Promise me you'll be careful...if anything happens to you..." I let out a shaky breath. I couldn't finish that thought. "Our child needs their father, Cyris, and I need my husband."
"Don't worry, kodavi, it will go by so fast, it will be like I didn't even leave," Cyris assured me. "I have a phone now so I'll call you every day. The journey won't be dangerous because I'll be with my royal guards."
"Don't worry?" I repeated.
"I guess that is easier said than done..." Cyris cracked a grin.
"I'm always worried about you," I whispered softly as I buried my face in his chest, clutching his shirt tightly in my hand. "I can't lose you...I just...I guess in the back of my mind, every time you get hurt...I'm taken back to that night when you were poisoned by Caja and I keep thinking about what could have happened if I hadn't..."
Cyris cradled me in his arms and rested his chin on the top of my head. "I'm always worried about you too...but it will be better now that we can use our phones. We can video chat as much as you want. And if you need to call me, call me anytime, I don't care what the hour is. I will pick up."
I pulled a silver chain out of my pocket. The chain had a few dog tag style charms on it, and each one was engraved. Two of them had our names, while the other three were engraved with important dates. The day we first met, the day I forgave him, and our official wedding date, which was May 15th, 2020. I handed it to him, biting my lip as I did.
"What is that, Vasia?"
"It's a bracelet of our life... Each tag has our initials on it or a date that's important to us...the first time we met...the day I forgave you after our big fight in the apartment, which...if my math is right...is also when our little warrior was conceived..." I pointed to each tag in turn and saw him smile as we both recalled the night our baby was most likely conceived. I'd dominated him and worshipped his body that night, showing him with my actions that I wasn't angry with him anymore and that I'd forgiven him. It had been an important moment for us both...in more ways than one it seemed. "And the last tag has the date that we got officially married on it," I explained. "I plan to add a tag with our baby's name after they're born... I was originally going to give the bracelet to you after our baby was born to celebrate their birth, but I...I thought you should have it now..."
"Rosanna...I love it! It's perfect," Cyris exclaimed happily. He kissed me deeply, then secured the bracelet around his wrist.
"Please be careful..."
"I promise you, I will. And I will be home soon."
"I love you."
"I love you too," Cyris said softly.
I felt a soft kick against my stomach and guided his hand to rest there again. I felt another kick.
"Our baby loves you too," I told him.
He rubbed my belly gently, and his eyes glistened.
"I love you too, little warrior," he looked down and spoke to my stomach. He kissed me once more and rubbed my stomach one more time before letting me go. It felt so wrong, but I knew it had to be done. My brother needed him in Riofalt to help defeat what remained of the Trillium Regime. I was born a Riofaltan and though I married into the royal family of Espor, I was still the Princess of Riofalt. I couldn't stand the thought of the Trillium running around villages there, murdering innocent people for sport. So, while part of me didn't want Cyris to go, the other part knew that it was the right thing to do since I couldn't go myself.
And so with a heavy heart, I watched as Cyris walked out the front door of the castle and I let him go...praying that he'd be alright.
