After hearing Ivy Raven's confession, Rosanna stormed out. I followed behind her while Ren stayed to make sure the cell door was locked securely. Once Ren caught up with me, I told him it would be best if he just retreated for the night. My wife and I needed to have a one-on-one, and it needed to happen while we were completely alone. Ren nodded and left us.
Rosanna and I went back to the master suite in silence. She went inside first and I shut the door before sitting down at the desk in the room. She started pacing in front of the fireplace, still reeling from the information that Ivy had given us. I knew that telling her to calm down would just be adding fuel to a fire, but I also knew that her stress was stress for our son, and I couldn't have that...
"Rose, I know you're angry—"
"Angry?! Angry isn't the word! She lied right to our faces, Cyris! She threatened our son!" Rosanna shouted.
"Maybe this assassin lied... Maybe Megara wasn't behind this," I offered and bit my lip. Rosanna had really hoped that Megara was different from her father. I had been hopeful too.
"You know as well as I do that even assassins crack under pressure. I mean, look at what happened to Byron's assassin when I interrogated him!" Rosanna reminded me. She ran her hands through her hair as fury burned in her eyes. "That...that little harlot! She wanted you! She wanted my crown! She was going to attempt to seduce you after I died, Cyris! Do you understand that?!"
"Hey, hey. Don't go there... You know she has no value over you. Not even close. I would never have gone for it," I assured her. I stood up and sat on the top of the desk.
Rosanna was breaking down, and I was watching it as it happened...my heart ached.
"I could have lost our son because of her!" Rosanna exclaimed as angry tears welled up in her eyes. "I could have lost our son..." She let out a shaky breath and the temperature dropped sharply. Rosanna's eyes flashed icy blue with anguish as she sank down to the floor in front of the fireplace, wrapping her arms around herself. "I could have... I could have lost him..." she choked out as she started sobbing.
I was frozen in place at first. She could have lost our son... Those words were like a knife stabbing into my chest over and over again. I couldn't imagine...if we had lost our son... Rosanna and I would have been destroyed... I had to admit, I was just as terrified as she was. But I knew she needed me, she needed me to comfort her, so I had to be strong.
"Rosanna," I gasped. It was so cold I could see my breath. I went over to her and crouched down beside her, then I pulled her into a hug. "You're right Vasia, we could have lost our son, but we didn't. He's okay, raxo. You're okay, and I couldn't be more thankful."
Rosanna buried her face in my chest and her sobs got quieter as she slowly calmed down. The temperature slowly rose. "What are we going to do? I can't... I can't let this go, Cyris... I...I need to get justice for our son... She can't get away with this."
She was right. Megara couldn't get away with this, she wouldn't. Both Ivy Raven and Megara Byron would die for their crimes.
"I'm not disagreeing, she deserves death. They both do. But I know how you feel about things like that..." I replied.
She pulled away from me and looked into my eyes. I wiped her tears away with my thumbs. The way she looked at me...her eyes were cold.
"I reserve my mercy for situations that warrant it, Cyris. This isn't one of those," she assured me.
I nodded warily. Rosanna was being totally relentless, and that wasn't like her...but if we're being honest I felt the exact same way. No one was going to threaten our family and expect to live afterward.
"Do you want me to go with you to confront Megara?"
"If you're okay with me being a bit brutal, then yes. I'm not going to show her mercy, not after what she tried to do to our son."
"Then it's decided," I told her. I let my own power spike a little, and I knew my eyes flickered to dark blue.
"Summon Megara Byron to the Council chamber, Cyris... It's time we end this..." Rosanna told me as her eyes flashed silver. Her power was out in full force as her emotions drove her to protect our son.
I nodded. I took out my cellphone, and typed out a simple email.
Megara Byron,
The King is requesting that you come to the royal Council chamber immediately.
You have one hour.
Sincerely,
Cyris Castellan, King of Espor, Lord of Crescent Reef, and Saviour of Blackwater
Megara's response came quickly. Almost like she was waiting for some kind of message from me.
Your Majesty,
So good to hear from you. Of course I'll come to the royal Council chamber at once. I can't wait to see you.
-Lady Megara Byron
The suggestive tone of her message wasn't lost on me. She must have thought her plan worked. I clutched onto my phone briefly, then put it back inside my pocket.
"She's on her way."
"Does she have any idea what she's being summoned for?" Rosanna asked.
"No...she has absolutely no idea what's in store for her."
"Good. Let's keep it that way. I want her to see the fury in my eyes as I turn her heart to ice and shatter it for our son."
Rosanna's statement gave me chills... I'd seen her rage before, on more than one occasion but this anger... This was different and I could feel it radiating from her. She had this new sense of protectiveness that was driving her. She was determined to defend our son, even if that meant she would step out of her comfort zone. Even if that meant she needed to be someone else if only for a moment... Rosanna was being a mother.
"The royal family of Espor is a wolf pack and female wolves are extremely protective of their pups... It's time for Megara Byron to learn just how protective I am of mine," she growled.
