Having snuck out of the palace again, I went to the lake and found my mother waiting for me. She'd called out to me and I needed to answer. I didn't know what she had in store for this evening, but I knew it wasn't good. I was dreading seeing Circe suffer, but I knew I needed to know what happened to her.
"Hello my sweet son," my mother greeted me.
"Mother...you really came back," I replied.
"Did you doubt I would?"
"Not so much that I doubted you, I doubted myself. I wasn't sure if...if maybe I had gone crazy," I admitted.
"Cyris...my little fish...you aren't crazy," she assured me. "Are...Are you ready to dive back into your sister's past?" Her little fish. That's what she used to call me when I was a boy.
"Yes, I'm ready..."
Mother waved her hand over the surface of the lake and I watched as the water rippled to show a young Circe and to my utter surprise, Caja was with her.
"Circe...we have to get out of here," Caja told my sister. Circe was sitting on the floor with her head against the wall.
"We tried that, Caja...multiple times...and every time ended with us both suffering the painful consequences..." Circe replied, "There's...There's no way out of this place..."
"We can't give up, Circe!"
"I'm not saying we give up. I'll keep fighting, but there's no escape from here, Caja. We've tried everything..." Circe closed her eyes and when she opened them, she was on the verge of crying.
"Well, we...we have to keep trying! I don't know if I could take being separated from you again," Caja cried.
"Wait a minute," I told my mother. "He separated them?! He kept Caja and Circe apart?!"
"He did," she replied. "Odon was relentless in his quest to mold Circe into his heir, and Caja was fiercely protective of her, refusing to stand aside. So, he temporarily incapacitated her and kept her away from Circe when he ran his dark magic through her..." My mother bit back tears. "That's why Caja never came to your sister's rescue...she couldn't..."
I let out a shaky breath. Separating a magic user from their familiar was like ripping away part of their soul. It broke them. If anyone had ever separated me from Farryn...no, the outcome was too painful to consider.
The fact that my sister had to endure being ripped away from her familiar repeatedly, on top of being tortured, made my heart ache and tears welled up in my eyes. I didn't want to hear anymore, but I knew I had to, so I turned my attention back to the surface of the lake.
Circe bit her lip. "I don't know how we're going to do this..." she whispered. "Maybe if we stand our ground? But...I'm not strong enough to fight...I don't know if I have enough magic..."
"I'm unsure if I have enough magic either..." Caja confessed.
The door opened and Caja cursed as Odon entered the room. His eyes landed on Caja and she moved to stand in front of Circe protectively.
"Stand aside, basilisk," Odon commanded.
"No!" Caja refused.
"If you don't stand aside...then you'll face the same fate you did last time."
Caja bit her lip and glanced back at Circe. Then she turned back to face Odon. "I'm not moving!" Caja shouted
"Please...just leave us alone..." Circe pleaded, trying to convince Odon to leave.
