I woke up screaming with tears streaming down my cheeks. Polaris was next to me in less than a second, holding me, trying to soothe me.
"It's okay...you're safe, Rose," he assured me.
My body shook as I cried in his arms.
"You're okay... I'm here with you Rose," Polaris continued. "You're safe... I won't let anything happen to you."
I looked at the night table where my rings were sitting, I hardly ever took them off...only when I slept and before I showered. As I looked at the rings, I thought of Cyris. I needed him to be in my arms. I needed to hold him... I needed him to comfort me, but at the same time I knew that wasn't a good idea. Being a Queen and a Princess meant sacrificing what was good for yourself for the sake of the people. And I needed to sacrifice my need for Cyris for the sake of the Riofaltan people. At least for now.
"Rose, be honest with me...do you want Cyris to come home?" Polaris asked.
"Yes..." I admitted without thinking. "But it's not just about what I want anymore, Polaris. I'm the Queen of Espor and the Princess of Riofalt. The people's needs are important too. Riofalt needs to be rebuilt."
Polaris sighed, but let me have my way...at least for now. He passed me my phone.
"Your phone went off earlier this morning," he stated. I looked at it and saw a text from Cyris.
Did you sleep well?
I bit my lip and typed a reply.
No... I kept having nightmares.
His reply came a few seconds later.
I did too... I didn't get much sleep...
I felt incredibly guilty. I'd just made Cyris experience another sleepless night. He lost enough sleep during the war...he didn't need this too.
I quickly typed a text and sent it to him.
I'm going down to interrogate the assassin today with Polaris and Sidra.
Are you sure you're up for it?
I have to be...we need to know who's behind this. Sidra will text Ren what we find.

I put my phone on the night table and got out of bed. I got ready and came back into the room.
"We're going to eat breakfast and then we're going to interrogate that assassin," I told Polaris as I gathered my courage.
"Are you sure you want to be there, Rose?" my familiar asked. He looked concerned.
"I need to do this, Polaris...I need to do this so I can resolve this and feel safe again," I admitted.
Polaris nodded in understanding.
