The sound of birds chirping filled my ears as I wandered through the woods. And eventually the chirping turned into peels of laughter.
I peered through the bushes and saw a happy family sitting by a lake. The two older children, a boy with brown hair and a girl with blonde hair, were playing tag, while the blonde haired mother sat under a tree, holding a small infant in her arms. The brown haired father was nearby and was playing with the two older children. They were all too familiar to me, I'd seen them here before.
Eventually, the man laughed and sat down next to his wife.
"They always seem to tire you out," the woman noted. "There's going to be a day when you can't keep up with them, my love."
"I know," the man agreed and turned to look at the baby his wife was holding. "And how's our littlest one?"
"Our lovely baby is doing well," the woman replied. "Fast asleep despite all the racket Mirella and Kian are making."
The man kissed the infant's forehead and whispered some words softly, so only the baby could hear.
And as he spoke to the infant, the sky darkened and cloaked figures appeared. They surrounded the family. The man's eyes glowed pale blue and his hands glowed with magic as he prepared himself to fight.
"Get out of here, Ilaria," the man told his wife. "Take the children and run."
"But what about you-" she began, but he cut her off.
"Please, my love, do as I say," he pleaded and she obeyed.
She rushed through the woods, carrying her young daughter. Mirella and Kian rushed behind her. I followed them, wanting to see what was happening. And part of me wished I hadn't.
Mirella and Kian heard their father scream and let out cries of anguish. Their mother pleaded with them to carry on, but they were surrounded within seconds.
Torn between saving her youngest child and helping her two older children. I watched as Ilaria grappled with what to do. Finally, Mirella made that decision for her.
"Go Mother, save-" but Mirella didn't get to finish her sentence as the cloaked figures caught and slaughtered her.

I sat up, gasping for air. I looked around me, taking in the familiar walls and soothing nature of my room. It took me a moment to recognize the feeling of the small bed I was laying on, but eventually I realized where I was. I was in my apartment.
