The next day, I sat in Cyris' study, reading and listening as he spoke to Lord Oliver. The minor Lord had apparently heard about the construction of my throne and came to voice his concerns. Sidra and Ren were nearby.
"Your Majesty, your father tried to give your mother a throne and it didn't work. Having a throne for the Queen is—" Lord Olivier began.
"Is exactly what I want, and it will be done," Cyris replied sternly.
"But My King...your Queen is a Riofaltan."
"What does that matter! Her lineage isn't important, her character is!" Sidra blurted.
"Do you not trust in our King?" Ren asked.
"Of course I do!" Lord Olivier insisted.
"Then why not trust him to choose the right Queen for our people?" Ren asked.
Lord Olivier muttered an apology and made a hasty exit.
"Ren, Sidra...can you leave us alone for a few moments?" I asked. They nodded and quietly left the room, closing the door behind them.
"He doesn't trust me Cyris, in fact no one in the Court does and I honestly don't blame them," I stated as I set my book down.
"They don't know you like I do. They will learn to trust you," Cyris assured me.
I sighed and didn't meet his eyes. I wasn't convinced.
Cyris stood up and smiled.
"I think this will cheer you up," he told me.
He left the study and returned minutes later with a box that was wrapped and had a bow on top.
"What's that?" I asked curiously.
"You'll see once you open it." He sat back down in his desk chair, and watched me expectantly, excitement in his eyes.
I opened the box and found a black cape with a silver wolf clasp on it. It was long and had a bit of subtle sparkle to it. It was easily one of the most beautiful garments I'd ever seen. It looked royal. And my heart felt full as I realized who this cape used to belong to.
"Cyris...this...this is Nerida's cape isn't it?" I asked as I swallowed hard. It couldn't really be her cape, could it?
He nodded silently.
"Baby..." I breathed as I set the box down. I went and sat on his lap. I rested a hand on his cheek, trying to soothe him. "Why? What made you get her cape out of storage?"
"Because I want you to have it...you are the Queen of Espor...and when our daughter—if we have a daughter, is ready to take the throne, you will pass this on to her as well," Cyris spoke softly.
Tears welled up in my eyes and streamed down my cheeks as I rested my forehead against his.
"Cyris...thank you..." I told him. I bit my lip. "I...I wish I could have met her..." I looked at Cyris with glistening eyes. "I wish I could have met the woman who helped make you the amazing man you are..."
"I know..." he bit his lip. "But I know she would have loved you, just as much as I do."
I kissed his lips softly, tenderly, letting him feel how grateful and touched I was by his gesture. I pulled away and looked into his eyes.
"Thank you," I whispered. "It's beautiful."
"You're welcome."
