The study was half the size of our master suite. I could still remember watching my own father as he filled out paperwork, waiting for him to be done so he could play with me. The black walls and cherry wood furniture paired nicely with the small chandelier that hung from the ceiling. There were a couple of bookshelves on the far side of the room, filled with old books about Espor's history, and there was a loveseat located on the opposite wall of my desk. The loveseat sat in front of a fireplace which currently held warm flames.
The sun was setting. I hadn't seen Rosanna since the court meeting because of all the tasks I had to complete. It had been hours and now my stomach was growling. I was sitting at my desk, doing some paperwork when I heard a knock at the door.
"Come in!" I called out.
Sidra entered and approached me.
"Thought you should see these," she told me as she handed me a couple of magazines she was carrying.
"Magazines? What for?" I asked.
"Look at the headlines."
I did as she said and gasped. My blood boiled as I saw the words "harlot," "bewitch," and "seduced" alongside my wife's name. How dare these people say those things about Rosanna?!
"There's a really damning article written in them as well," Sidra said as she pinched the bridge of her nose. "Claiming that an inside source in the palace knows that Rosanna is using you for power and that she seduced you and bewitched you with a spell!"
I got up and took the magazines from Sidra in one movement. I walked over to the fireplace and tossed them into the flames, watching with satisfaction as they burned. Who could have done something like this?! And for what reason?!
"Sidra, were those the only copies?" I questioned.
"Of course not! They're all over Blackwater!" Sidra exclaimed. Then she realized how harsh she sounded. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to—"
"Get rid of them all," I told her, cutting her off curtly. I was angry, and I was determined.
Sidra's phone beeped and she glanced down at the screen. A shocked gasp escaped her lips, and she held up her phone so that I could see. Her phone was open to an article and written at the top, in bold, was a headline, which read: "Is Rosanna Aster really carrying Cyris Castellan's child or is her baby the product of an affair?"
"Where are these media creeps getting these rumours?!" I flared.
"I don't know. Their anonymous source claims to be someone in the castle, but the staff all love Rose," Sidra stated. "They've never seen a more caring Queen than her."
Someone in the castle? No... Someone else... someone that benefited from tarnishing my wife's reputation. But to stoop so low to get what they want? This person could be dangerous...
"Cyris, what are we going to do?!" Sidra implored. "Rose broke down in tears when she saw those magazines!"
Before I could respond, a maid rushed into the room. She curtsied quickly and turned to Sidra.
"My Lady...the Queen is requesting your presence in her solarium study. She seems quite distressed," the maid stated.
Sidra turned to look at me with concern in her eyes.
