"Rose... talk to me! Is everything okay?!" I was frantic. I didn't know what was wrong, but something had to have been wrong, based on Rosanna's expression. Or so I'd thought...
"I'm fine, Cyris," she assured me.
"Are you sure?" I asked. I gazed deeply into my wife's eyes, searching for any truth to her statement.
After everything that happened over the past couple days, I couldn't trust she was being completely honest. And I hated to admit that fact. I was concerned. I didn't want Rosanna to be in pain and then feel like she needed to downplay it, like she had over the past couple of days.
"I swear I'm okay." She took my hand and guided it to her stomach. I felt our baby move within her. I wasn't exactly sure what I was feeling, but it worried me.
"It's alright, Cyris," Rosanna assured me, noticing the panicked look in my eyes. "Our little warrior is just trying to get comfortable it seems."
"How do you know? How are you so sure?" I asked, concerned for our baby.
"I went to see Dr. Ko while you were gone for one of my routine checkups and I told her our little one is really active and she said it's normal," my wife explained. "She even said that sometimes, I might find that the baby is more active than usual after sex because of all the movement, and that it's fine. But she also said that sex is good for me during my pregnancy for various reasons, one of the most important ones is that it'll help me relax, which in turn will help our baby relax. And it's a good way for you and me to strengthen our bond because we'll need that when our little warrior is born."
I relaxed a little and looked down at Rosanna's belly. She had gotten so big, so quickly. It was hard to believe such a small being was inside of her. Watching Rosanna's belly grow made me so excited, and I couldn't wait to meet our baby. My heart melted. I couldn't help but smile.
"So... Dr. Ko said it was normal?" I inquired.
"Yeah," Rosanna assured me. "This is just the first time I've actually experienced it. It's like our little one is just snuggling into a blanket. Sort of like how I curl up to your body before we fall asleep."
I bit my lip. I needed to confess that I still felt bothered by her behaviour in regards to her pain. Or I was never going to let it go. Rosanna was my life, a gift that I cherished, and now she'd blessed me with another gift that I also cherished.
"Rose...I want you to know how I feel... It really upsets me that you hid how much pain you were in while the amulet was being used," I admitted.
Rosanna sighed.
"It's got nothing to do with you. I'm just...my mind is hardwired that way... it's used to downplaying and burying pain, I guess..." she admitted. "I've spent my entire life doing that. It's just a really bad habit I have."
"But you don't have to do that anymore... Look where we are."
She bit her lip.
"I know... I just... I guess I felt like I needed to prove something...so I shut down and downplayed my pain, inadvertently shutting you out in the process," she confessed.
I kissed her tenderly, and brushed some hair from her face.
"What are you trying to prove?"
"That I'm not a weak Queen. That I'm more than capable of being responsible for Espor in your absence. That you didn't make a mistake in choosing me... The Court talks and over the past couple weeks there's been a lot of 'Are we really so sure the Queen is capable?' and 'I bet the King just chose her for her beauty.' I didn't want to be a pretty little Queen that hides when she feels pain."
