Felix, Rosanna, and I left the safehouse, and headed for the Festival. As we made it to the center of town, the crowds of people got bigger, and music filled the air. Every inch of the town square was covered with different vendors, selling things from food to clothing. Children were running around, hopping from one game booth to the next. Rosanna's eyes lit up as she took in the scene before us and she turned to look at me with those sparkling green eyes of hers.
"It's your first Festival of the Falling Stars. Where would you like to start?" she asked.
I was honoured. This Festival meant so much to her, and still, all she could think about was me. I found myself smiling, and I'm sure Rosanna thought I looked silly. She smiled at me and kissed my cheek.
"No preferences then?" she asked.
"Show me your favourite booths first."
We went over to a booth that had a bunch of rings and bottles. Rosanna grabbed a few rings and handed some to me.
"The goal of this game is to get as many rings on the bottles as you can," Rosanna told me.
"That sounds easy enough," I replied. But I was dead wrong. I missed every bottle.
"Have you ever skipped stones at a lake or river?" she asked.
"When I was little? I'm not sure."
"Well tossing the rings is kind of like that. Flick your wrist and let it go."
I focused, and listened to what she told me. I tossed one of the rings once more, trying my best to aim for a bottle. I still missed, but the ring grazed the top of the bottle at least, and I felt like I'd won the whole game. Apparently, I didn't get out enough.
"It worked!" I jumped up and down.
Rosanna laughed and that sound brought me so much joy. Her laughter was music to my ears. I stayed at this booth a little longer, and eventually I got the hang of the game. Rosanna still won of course, but we had a blast. We played a few more games and Felix was pretty quiet. I almost forgot he was with us, but he'd usually remind us of his presence by laughing at me when I lost a game against Rosanna. After we'd had our fun, Rosanna grabbed a couple of apples on sticks for us. She handed one to me.
"Have you ever had one of these before?" she asked.
"No, what is it?"
"It's a caramel covered apple. A classic Festival food in Riofalt. It's not a party if they aren't serving caramel covered apples. Go on, try it!"
I took a bite from the apple she gave me, and the caramel melted on my tongue immediately. The tartness from the apple, mixed with the sweetness, was the best thing I had ever tasted!
"It's-guhd," I mumbled.
"I'm sorry, what was that?" she asked playfully.
"It's really good," I admitted after swallowing the bite I took. She smiled at me.
Eventually the sun began to set and the darker it got. It seemed like Rosanna became more excited as the night took over the sky, and I was curious as to why.
