The police must have heard us leave because we heard them shouting from behind us as we scrambled to get away. I ran behind Rosanna, who took us through someone's backyard and we hopped their fence. We ended up on the next street over and kept running, not looking back in fear of slowing down.
Eventually, we made it into the woods and kept going, needing to get as far away from there as possible. I admit, Rosanna was fast, I almost couldn't keep up with her. The police sirens echoed through the trees, and as the sun set we could see their car lights flashing. But we kept moving.
We managed to make it far into the woods, and Rosanna finally turned to me.
"I think we're far enough away," she told me, trying to catch her breath.
"Yeah, we'll just have to be careful..." I said breathlessly. "We can't be sure they won't come to the woods on foot." I was bent over with my hands resting on my knees, still trying to breathe evenly.
Rosanna fiddled with her locket and scanned the woods looking for signs of danger. I could tell by her body language she was anxious again.
"Don't worry babe, we're going to be fine," I reassured her. I assumed her anxiety came from the possibility that we'd be caught, but I was way off.
Rosanna looked at me nervously. "You...you were kind of distant with me when we first got to Cliffbarrow," she stated. "Why? Do you see me differently now that you know the full extent of my past in Cliffbarrow? The pain, the crimes I committed..."
I didn't expect her question. I stood up and put my hands on my hips.
"Is that a serious question?" I frowned.
She bit her lip and didn't answer at first. "I just...I want to be sure. You need to understand that I've never let anyone in this much and I...I just don't want to mess up what we have. I don't want my past to screw anything else up. I—"
I put my finger to her lips and she stopped talking.
"When will you get that I love you? I'm in love with you, Rosanna, and there's nothing that will ever change that."
"I understand, Cyris," she said softly. "But it doesn't mean I don't worry about it sometimes. I guess I've been looking over my shoulder too much over the past two years."
I pressed my forehead to hers and kissed her sweetly.
"I'm here to protect you now."
She nodded and wrapped her arms around me, breathing in my scent and letting me calm her.

It was completely dark out now, and the sirens became more and more faint. Rosanna and I decided it was safe to set up camp, so we did. I was supposed to be setting up the fire pit this time, but I was too distracted. I was mesmerized by the love of my life. Just when I thought she couldn't be anymore perfect, now we knew she was Riofaltan royalty. Rosanna Aster. And she was all mine. We had proven that she had royal blood, so marrying her would be a much smoother process than if she didn't have a royal bloodline. Not that politics mattered, I would have married her regardless.
She finished setting up the tent and approached me. I was ashamed that I wasn't even close to being done with my task, but Rosanna didn't seem to mind.
"April 15th, 1999..." she whispered. "Well April is a rainy month, so I guess that explains why I love the rain... Well that and one other reason." She looked at me and her cheeks turned pink.
"What's the other reason?"
"You. The rain...it reminds me of you now," she admitted. "When it washes over me and you aren't around, I'm reminded of your embrace. When I was walking home from the bar one night, it started raining and all I could think about was your arms around me. Everyone always thinks of the rain as gloomy or depressing, but to me...the rain is the greatest thing in the world because it reminds me of the man I love."
My heart melted. I pulled her close and kissed her forehead, then kissed her on the lips. I didn't want to pull away, but it started raining.
"Cyris! Stop with the rain already," Rosanna huffed.
"It's not me, I swear. Not this time!" I protested. Then I created a small shield, and the rain began to miss us completely. I smirked, "Shall we go to the tent?"
She nodded and the two of us went inside. We curled up together in the sleeping bag and she turned to me.
"Cyris... I love you," she whispered softly. "I love you...my beloved Prince of Water. My rainstorm. And I'm grateful that you came here with me."
"I love you too, my Princess of Ice. My snowflake in the stars—I'm sorry I'm cheesy," I bit my lip. I could never keep myself together around her, I was like putty in her hands.
"It's fine, I love your cheesiness." She smiled at me and then winced a little, holding her head.
"What's wrong? You need some medicine? I brought some painkillers," I offered.
"No...no I'm fine," she assured me. "It'll pass."
"I thought you said the doctor gave you a good report..." I was starting to doubt what she told me before... But why would she not tell me the truth? It made my heart start racing.
"You're bringing that up again? I'm fine! I just need sleep," she kissed me and placed her head on my chest. "Goodnight."
I wasn't fully convinced, but she had no reason to lie to me, so I let it go.
"Goodnight, Vasia," I replied quietly.
I drifted off to sleep listening to the rain, and breathing in Rosanna's scent. Having the warmth of her body next to mine, made me feel whole.
