I walked into my sister's childhood room the next day. It was a fair sized room and the walls were a deep red. There was a twin sized bed off to one side with a canopy over it. There was a nightstand next to it and a small play area was in the far corner of the room. A dresser sat against the wall closest to the door.
What brought me here this morning anyway? Why was I drawn to this room, her room? Looking around brought so much heartache, yet I also wanted to be with my sister. I wanted to hug her... hold her, and let her know that she was still loved regardless of her past. Circe needed to hear me tell her I forgave her... even if she didn't forgive me for Tamara's death. I still felt guilty.
As I got lost in my thoughts, I found myself going through Circe's things. I found a few old drawings at her small art desk. They made me smile. I laid the drawings out and looked at them. There were a couple landscapes and a family portrait as well. Circe had always been a good artist.
I sat down on her bed and glanced down at her nightstand curiously. I looked in the nightstand drawer and found a small box that had a label on it, which read "For Cyris." There was another small box next to it that read "For Circe." I opened the box with my name on it and saw a bracelet made of black leather with a gold clasp. There was a note inside the box as well.
Cyris,
Mommy helped me make these. She even gave me a box for each of them! There's one for you and one for me. So now even when we're apart, we'll always have each other.
-Circe
My heart shattered as I read the note. Circe had meant to give this to me, but never had the chance. Too curious for my own good, I opened the box with my sister's name on it and found a beaded leather bracelet. My hand shook as I held the bracelets. I was angry all over again. Odon had taken so much from my family, so much from Circe, so much from me... I clutched the bracelets in my fists.
I put the bracelets back in their rightful boxes, folded the note carefully and put it in my pant pocket. I needed to talk to Rosanna about all this and, more importantly, I needed her to help me calm down.
I found my wife in the library, reading.
She must have sensed my aura, because she looked up as I approached her and frowned as she noticed the expression on my face.
"What's wrong?" she asked as she set her book down.
I bit my lip as I presented the two boxes to Rosanna. Then I pulled the note from my pocket. I watched her open up both boxes before she gasped and inspected them.
"And there's this," I gave her the note.
She read it and then embraced me. "Are you okay?" Rosanna asked.
"No...I'm not okay," I admitted.
She held me tighter and moved so that she was sitting on my lap. She kissed my jaw and neck soothingly, trying to bring me some comfort.
"Last night you said you wanted to go down to see her by yourself...do you still want that or do you want me to go with you?" she asked.
"I still think it's best if I go by myself this time," I sighed.
