Cliffbarrow hadn't changed at all since I left two years ago. It was still the same town with all the same shops, even the houses were the same. Thankfully everything was closed now, so Cyris and I didn't have to deal with the townspeople. As we walked the streets of Cliffbarrow, I caught sight of some posters on a wall and cursed. They were "wanted" posters with my image on them. I took my hoodie from my bag and slipped it on, trying to hide my platinum blonde hair.
"And you said I would be the one to be known more," Cyris joked.
I knew he was trying to lighten the mood, but I wasn't going for it at that moment.
"They aren't from the Trillium, Cyris," I replied. "They're from the authorities here in Cliffbarrow. I froze my parents, remember?"
He got quiet and withdrawn. I knew it. I knew coming to this place would change his view of me.
"Yes, I remember," he said softly.
"We need to find a safe place to hide," I told him, trying to shake off my anxiety about Cyris' silence.
"Alright, let's go."
But where could we go? My face was plastered all over the city. I took a deep breath as I realized that there was one place and one place only where we could hide from prying eyes. But would I be able to handle walking into that place again? I had to. I needed to protect myself and Cyris from being arrested.
"Follow me," I told Cyris.
I led Cyris to my old house, the house I grew up in. I knew my parents' frozen bodies wouldn't be there anymore, but I still felt like I was going to be sick. We approached the door and I grabbed the key from its hiding place in the plant on the porch.
"Who's house is this?" Cyris asked.
"It's...It's mine...or it was..." I choked out.
I was surprised it was still here. I unlocked the door and my breath caught in my throat as I noticed that the layout of the room was still the same, and the furniture hadn't been moved. I guess the townspeople hadn't known what to do with this place. As I took in the room, I couldn't help but be taken back to that terrible night...the night they died...the night I killed them.
I sat on the couch, watching a movie with my dad, while my mom made dinner. I hoped that they didn't mention what had happened earlier that day. My powers had acted up and I'd frozen a tree while trying to decorate it for the Festival of the Falling Stars.
"Dinner's ready!" Mom called.
Dad and I headed into the dining room and sat down at the table. We ate quietly for a while, but eventually Dad spoke up.
