I was in pain, but that didn't mean that I could stop being a Queen. I had a meeting with Lord Byron this afternoon. I was hoping I'd finish the meeting before Cyris got back so that I could get some more rest and get a boost from his aura. I needed it badly, but I couldn't allow myself to appear weak in front of the Council Lords, especially one as vindictive as Lord Byron. So after saying goodbye to Cyris and quieting Polaris' protests, I got ready for my meeting with the troublesome Lord.
"Rose, you heard what Cyris said. You should be in bed."
"I feel a bit better, Polaris," I assured him. "It's only a couple meetings."
"I don't think it's a good idea. You feel better now, but what about in twenty minutes, huh?"
Polaris' concern was understandable. I'd just had an awful and pain filled morning and I hadn't slept much. Going outside of the master suite was a risk since we didn't know where the amulet was, but at the same time I couldn't shirk my responsibility.
"I'll be alright for a little while, but you're welcome to join me if it makes you feel better..." I told him.
"Well, I'm definitely joining you. But that doesn't make me feel better," he frowned.
"I'll be fine. I feel a bit stronger, Polaris."
I didn't mind that Polaris had chosen to join me for my meetings. He'd always been incredibly protective of me. Our bond ran deep and he always had my back.
"Alright, let's go then," I told him.

I entered the Council chamber with Polaris and found Lord Byron waiting for me.
"You wanted to see me, My Lord?" I asked.
"Yes I did, Queen Rosanna," he spat. He closed the door and grabbed my wrist. Then he slammed me against a wall, pinning me there.
I gasped at the motion and the fact that he touched me. How dare he?! What gave him the right to do that?! I was the Queen!
"Take your hands off me! I'm your Queen!" I commanded.
Polaris growled and approached us, moving in to help me, but Byron saw him coming.
"I don't think so, ice phoenix," Byron sneered. He tossed a vial at Polaris' feet. It shattered and a plume of black ash rose up and Polaris started choking. I felt his pain shoot through my veins. "Volcanic ash...I've heard it weakens ice phoenix changelings. I see the rumours are true."
"Polaris!" I cried as he fell to his knees and eventually passed out. Anger coursed through my veins as I turned to Byron. No one harmed my familiar on my watch. "What is the meaning of this?!" I growled.
"Listen here you witch! Everyone may be fooled by you, even our beloved King Cyris, but I'm no fool!" he replied.
"What are you talking about?! I command you to take your hands off me!"
But instead of obeying, Byron grabbed my face aggressively. I tried to use my powers, but couldn't. Pain shot through my veins and I felt myself getting weaker.
"You have no power over me you little ice brat," he sneered and I noticed the silver chain around his neck. He pulled the silver circle with that district engraving out of his shirt and I had to hold back a gasp. He'd been responsible for weakening my powers all this time, but was he Carson's employer or just another assassin sent to kill me?
"What do you want?" I asked as pain shot through my body. Being this close to the amulet was excruciating. It was like every part of my soul was slowly freezing solid...like I was dying inside. But I was dying...this amulet was slowly killing me with its proximity.
"I want you gone! My daughter should be Queen," he growled. Fear ran down my spine as he lowered his hand to my neck and tightened. "And once life leaves your body, your spell over the King will be ended. Espor has no room for a Riofaltan!"
The gears turned in my head as I processed that. His daughter? Megara? Did he really want her to be Queen so badly that he was willing to kill me for it?
My body shook as I started to panic. If he killed me, he wouldn't just be killing me. He'd be killing my unborn child as well. I tried fighting him off, but it was no use. He was too strong and I was powerless. Having no other options, I decided to plead with his conscience...hoping that he'd let me go because of the baby I was carrying.
"Please...I'm carrying the King's heir... For their sake...please just let me go..." I choked out, pleading with him to stop.
"Never..." Byron hissed as he tightened his hold on my neck even more, choking me harder.
Everything started getting hazy and I knew I was losing consciousness. Polaris was still laying on the ground and I was losing hope that I'd be able to survive this. But then my soul sensed a familiar and soothing watery aura nearby. Cyris was home! He could help me get out of this situation. I just needed to find the strength to call out to him. I let my weakened icy aura reach out to his watery one and prayed that he could hear me.
Cyris...
"The crow is such an elegant creature, wouldn't you agree, My Queen?" Byron asked. My eyes widened as I recalled the crow tattoo on the assassin's neck. Had he sent the assassin? He was going to kill me... I guess he did want his daughter to be Queen that badly. But I'd need to worry about that later. I needed to survive this first and I didn't have much time. I had to protect the little warrior within me, so I let my icy aura call out to Cyris again, desperately trying to reach him.
Cyris...please...
He'd come for me. He had to. For me...for our future...for ourbaby...
