Scarlett’s POV
Flashback
[Sam flatlined and I had to give her CPR. I can't tell her she’ll feel guilty. “Hey Sargent Mily, how are you feeling?” Her CO asks walking in. “Well I’ve got my best friend so just fine but we do need to talk. Scarlett can we have the room?” Sam says. “Of course.” I  tell her as I fiddle with the dog tags on my neck and her CO gives me a funny look when he sees me wearing them. I don’t mean to eavesdrop, ok that's a lie. “Why is your friend wearing your tags Sargent?” Her CO asks. “I gave them to her Sir.” Same says in her Marine voice fuck that voice is hot. No Scarlett, she's your best friend. “You know that’s against the rules, Sargent.” He scolds. “Not if I am leaving the Marines Sir.” She says. “What? Why you are the best combat medic I have ever had the pleasure of working with.” He asks, taken aback. “For her Sir. She’s my best friend, she's the one I told you about the one that saved me from my dad. Sir when I saw her face when she walked in here yesterday and she saw me it broke my heart. I can't do this to her. I don’t want her to worry that I am going to go on deployment and come home in a casket. And I have loved working alongside you and the others. But I have to do this for her.” She says I want to march in there and call her an idiot and not to do that but then she’d know I’m listening. “What about you Sam? What are you going to do?” He asks in almost a fatherly tone. “I can explore my music career. I mean I have a whole album worth of lyrics already written, you know that.” She says. “You are a talented woman. Sam I wholeheartedly believe you would become an amazing and popular artist if you decide to go through with this. But think of the lives you could save if you stay.” He says not trying to guilt trip her. “I know but I also know that music can save lives. It saved mine when I was young.” She says. “Ok.” He says. “Ok?” She asks. “Sam you know I don’t have any children of my own and you are the closest thing I have to a daughter and if this is what you want then I will support you. I love ya kid.” He says. “I love you too Dad I mean Paul. You are like the father I always wanted. You never judged me for being different or gay. I will always be grateful for you and I’ll keep in touch.” She says. “You better. “I should call him.” She says. “Do it I’ll type in his number.” I say she tells me the number and the line rings twice before he picks up.
“This is General Paul Rich. Who is this?” He says.
“Wow General now.” Sam says.
“Sammy? Is that really you?” He asks and it’s clear he’s crying.
“Yeah it’s me Dad.” She says and he breaks down. “Honey what’s wrong?” A womans voice says. “It’s my daughter Sam.” He says and it’s a good thing I have an hour till the appointment because Sam had to pull over because she was getting emotional. “YOU  SAM MILY HAVE SOME EXPLAINING TO DO!! PAUL TALKS ABOUT YOU ALL THE TIME AND YOU NEVER KEPT IN TOUCH!!!” The woman yells.
“I know and I’m so sorry Dad.” She says. "WATCH YOUR TONE LADY! THAT'S MY WIFE THAT YOU ARE TALKING TO!!” I yell getting defensive.
“Whoa ladies calm down.” Paul says.
“Who is that Dad?” She asks.
“That’s my wife Merideth.” He says.
“Wow you found someone who will put up with you.” She laughs.
“You did. Took you two long enough to get together. It’s nice to hear from you too Scarlett.” Paul says.
“It’s nice to talk to you too Paul.” I tell him.
“Oh please call me Dad you did marry my daughter.” He says.
“So how are you Dad?” Sam asks.
“I’m good. I’m stationed in Norway.” He says.
“Where in Norway?” I ask.
“Oslo. Why?” He says.
“Do you follow Sam on Instagram?” I ask.
“Yes and you.” He says.
“You know that picture I posted a couple hours ago?” Sam asks.
“Yes Scarlett is feeling stabby.” He laughs.
“That was taken this morning on set of my new movie. Outside of Oslo. We were driving to Oslo when we called. You two can see each other again!” I cheer.
“I work at the embassy.” He says.
“See you in fifteen.” Sam says starting the car and speeding off. “Sam careful I’m pregnant remember!” I yell at her and she slows down back to the speed limit.
“YOU ARE PREGNANT!!?” Paul screams happily.
“You tell a soul and you are a dead man.” I say.
“I don’t want to get on the Black Widow’s bad side. I won’t tell anyone. Does your other kids know?” He asks.
“I just told Sam today we are going to the doctor if you want to join.” I tell him he is basically Sam’s dad.
“Really?” He asks.
“Yes. Dad.” I say emphasizing the ‘Dad’
“What doctor? I’ll meet you there.” He asks and I tell him the name and address.
“I’ll see you soon Sammy.” He says.
“See you soon Dad.” She says before he hangs up.

“Why didn’t you say that he is practically your Dad?” I ask. “You never asked. I can’t believe I get to see him again it’s been more than ten years.” She says. After a while we pull up across the street from the doctors office Sam sees  him and jumps out of the car nearly getting hit by a motorcycle running across the street. “DAD!” She yells as they embrace a woman around Paul’s age stands from the bench. “Hey Dad. I’m glad she had you.” I tell him as I hug him. “I hope you don’t mind I brought Merideth.” He says. “Not at all. It’s nice the meet the woman who could tie you down.” Sam says, giving her a huge hug. “Why didn’t you stay in touch with Paul?” Merideth asks. “I don’t know I wish I did. I wish I could go back in time and  change that.” Sam says sadly. “I need to get checked in.” I say so we make our way inside. “Hi yes I have an appointment the name is Mily.” I say. “Yes Ma’am you are early but the doctor will get to you as soon as they can.” The nurse tells me and I thank them and go sit with Sam, Paul, and Merideth. "It’s ok we are back in touch now. Tell me all about those grandbabies of mine and I want to see pictures." Paul says so Sam pulls out her phone and opens up her photos and he takes the phone and scrolls through the pictures. "Ah I don't need to see that!" He shrieks throwing the phone at Sam and I see what he shrieked at and it’s a nude selfie of me I sent Sam. “My eyes.” He say dramatically. “Are you sure you two are related biologically. “I’ve never met Laura. Markus I met once.” He says Markus with hatred and Sam tears up and pulls out her wallet and the letter he wrote her before he died. “What’s this?” He asks. “Da wrote it before he died.” She says and she looks shocked. “Markus died?” He asks. “He died trying to get sober for me but his body couldn’t handle the sudden change and he died. So just read that please.” She says and I pull her into me. “Sammy I’m sorry I didn’t know he passed.” He says. “At least I’ve still got you.” She says before we are called back.
