Chapter #103
Sam’s POV
Scarlett is at a meeting for the Outset. I am so proud of her. Now Robbie and Karsten are watching the kids as Liz has convinced me to be her partner in crime to follow Sarah and find out who this person she’s seeing is. I know I shouldn’t but I need to know. “Hold on Scarlett texted me.” I say pulling up the message.
Penguin
Scarlett: I wanna be your best friend who occasionally gives you orgasms.
Me: You already are and do.
Scarlett: I love you.
Me: I want to cuddle you all night and watch a movie
Scarlett: Awww
Me: JK I want to fuck u until u can’t walk.
Scarlett: I’m down.
Scarlett: Oh and Sarah called me. She can see you and Liz in the bush.“Liz, look.” I say showing her the last message. We stand up and walk over to Sarah who looks pissed rightfully so with our heads hung low. “Spying on me really?” She scolds Liz and I. “I’m sorry Honey I just wanted to make sure you were safe.” I say. “Sargent Sammy?” The person at her table says. “Holy fuck.” I breathe out it’s the kid from all those years ago. “You two know each other?” Sarah asks as memories from that day come flooding in. “I uh um I’ve got to go.” I say and run off.
Scarlett’s POV
“I DON’T CARE GET OUT OF MY WAY!” I hear Sam scream and she bursts into my office drenched in sweat. “What’s going on?” Scarlett asks. “I can’t breathe. I can’t.” Sam says clutching her shirt and slides down the wall and curls into a ball. “Everyone out now.” I say and everyone leaves the office. “Sam, can you maybe get to the couch? I can't get on the ground.” I ask and she nods her breathing heavy. “Ok talk to me.” I say rubbing her back and her eyes go to the tags around my neck ok so this has to do with her time in the Marines. “Did an engine backfire? What happened?” I ask. “I got blown up.” Is all that comes from her mouth before she completely breaks down and the ringtone I have for Sarah’s contact starts to play I answer it and put it on speaker.
“Mom do you have any sort of way to track Ma? She went into a PTSD spiral and ran off. I'm worried.” Sarah says.
“She’s here. She just ran in, yelled at my assistant and burst into my office. Her eyes immediately went to her dog tags that I wear around my neck so I know it has something to do with her time in the Marines all I got out of her was ‘I got blown up’ what the hell happened?” I ask worried as I rub Sam's back as she sobs into my shoulder.
“Mrs. Johansson my name is Nicky. I’m the kid she got injured protecting. I called her by her title and she panicked. I didn't mean to do that to her I promise.” The young girl says.
“Sam is asleep on my lap. Nicky, how did you end up on a date with my daughter?” I ask confused.
“Well you see my parents build homes for habitat for humanity and.” She starts.
“I remember Sam writing to me telling me they were assigned to a group from Habitat for humanity. Are you the little girl she played soccer with?” I ask.
“Yeah I am. She wrote about me?” She asks,
“Yes she said that spending time with you while your parents were building homes made her feel better because you always had a smile on your face even if you lost in soccer she said that you were like a little beacon of hope.” I tell her. I have every letter she sent me memorized and they are all in an oak box in my closet.
“I just thought playing soccer with her was fun, that's why I didn’t care if I lost. She even taught me some things I got into UCLA on a sports scholarship for playing soccer thanks to some of the things she taught me. I never knew how much I impacted her. I never got to thank her for what she did and for making time for me even though she was busy keeping me safe at the same time.” Nicky says.
“You got a scholarship because of me?” Sam croaks out ok I guess I was wrong when I thought she was asleep.
“I did Sargent Sammy. Thank you for what you did that day.” Nicky says.
“Please just call me Sam. I'm not serving anymore.” Sam says.
“But you told me once a Marine is always a Marine.” Nicky says and Sam smiles.
“I did. I am a Marine but I am no longer employed by the Marines and I don’t use that title anymore. We are at Scarlett’s office Liz can you drive them here? I would like to catch up with Nicky in person.” Sam says.
“You got it, we'll be there in five.” Liz says.
Five minutes later there is a knock on the door. “Come in.” I say. Thankfully I had one of Sam’s sweat shirts in my desk for her to change into so she doesn’t have to wear a sweat covered shirt. “Hey Sam.” Nicky says nervously. “Can I hug you?” Sam asks, making Nicky smile. They share a hug full of emotion. “Sarah never told me her last name because she didn’t want me to get scared away. She told me her moms were famous but she didn’t tell me it was you and Scarlett Johansson.” Nicky laughs. “You aren’t going to run?” Sarah asks. “No, I'm not going to run. I love you. You know that Baby.” Nicky says to Sarah, taking her hand. “I know she’s safe with you. Because I taught you more than just soccer moves.” Sam says. “You didn’t teach her hand to hand did you?” I ask. “Mrs. Johansson, she had my parents permission and we were in a war zone.” Nicky says. “Nicky knows more than Sarah does I only taught Sarah boxing.” Sam says. “I visited you.” Nicky tells Sam. “What?” Sam asks. “Well my parents did. I just went with them. They wanted to thank you for saving me. But you were still sedated with a tube in your throat. It was at the M*A*S*H unit that we went to.” Nicky says. “I’m just glad you are ok. I was unconcious and wasn’t able to check you for injuries you weren’t hurt right I was able to shield you enough?” Sam ask. “I had no injuries because of you. You saved me.” Nicky says choking up. “I did my job. How long have you two been seeing each other?” Sam asks changing the subject. “Six months.” Sarah says. “Wait, that was before our family vacation. Was it Nicky you were always texting?” I ask. “Yeah. I didn’t want Ma to scare her away.” Sarah says and Sam and Nicky look at each other then burst out laughing. “Me? Afraid of her. Oh Honey I love you and I appreciate you looking out for me but I know your Ma and I could never be scared of her because for the first six months of her being assigned to the habitat for humanity group we were part of she made sure I felt safe around her and I still feel safe around her after all these years. “It’ll be sixteen years since you met and fifteen years since you last saw each other.” I say. “Huh she’s right.” Nicky says. “How are your parents? Skyler and Spencer?” Sam asks. “They are good, they are in Haiti still working for habitat for humanity.” Nicky says.A/N
A little emotional. But now we know who the secret person Sarah has been seeing and a blast from the past for Sam. This chapter’s question is what’s one thing you learned from your father? My dad taught me how to fish. Anygays see you in the next one.
