Chapter 124 - "Loosing Anybody Tonight...?"

Clara's PoV

'Come on Avery. Keep her on her side'

'Whys she vomiting?'

'Could be the pregnancy. Let's just get her to the hospital. We've done a drain and that's all we can do for now. She was talking so I guess I just didn't notice anything unusual' George said as he rushed around the ambulance and looked for something to help with the vomiting.

Thankfully he administered that and some pain relief, then decided the next port of call was the chest injury had had to be needing a chest drain.

'How far away are we?' George yelled, as Clara continued to vomit into the bowl.

'15 minutes. We're going as quickly as we can' she said as the ambulance turned a corner and Clara started to convulse.

'Head injury?' Avery asked as the two of them tried to hold her still and keep the fitting at bay.

'She's holding her own airways' George said looking at the snack to her forehead and looked up at Ana. 'So no I don't think it is'

He felt bad now. She had been conscious at the scene. She was chatting away - in fact he was sure they were flirting for some time at the scene so he didn't think too much of a head injury.

Now however it seemed like a late onset delay.

'Call ahead' George said as he fought to clear her airways.

He was not loosing anybody tonight.

Meanwhile in the ambulance that was about 10 minutes ahead Avia had started to come around into consciousness but was very drowsy and groggy.

'Where's Mummy?' She begged.

'She's in the ambulance behind. I promise she's okay. And your Dad will meet us at the hospital' she instructed as Avia could feel shooting pains up her legs.

'My legs hurt' she whined.

'They were trapped under the chair but were doing what we can. I don't think they're broken through' she informed her.

Avia was a smart 11 year old so everything that was being said she was taking in like an adult.

Whilst she was a smart child - the last thing she wanted was to be in this mess and she really, really just wanted Clara to be okay.

John got to the hospital and ran for the reception desk but to his horror - they had beaten the ambulance there.

'I'm looking for the couple of people that were on the school trip? The coach crash? Avia Smith and Clara Oswald?'

'They're not quite here yet--' she said as the double doors opened and a trolley came through presenting Avia laid out but as soon as she saw John her eyes started to water.

'Daddy' she cried as John ran towards her and grabbed her hand to calm her down.

'Hey. It's okay. I'm here' he said assuringly but looking out the corner of his eye for Clara.

He could see that both legs were strapped up and she still had her neck strapped up. Clearly there hadn't ruled out any kind of neck injury.

'Where's Mummy? Is she okay? Is she going to be okay?' Avia asked as he carried on being there so that he was looking over her to make her feel less nervous even though he could see that he was distressing her quite a lot and was getting in the way of the medical staff.

'I'm sure she's going to be fine' John said stroking his thumb over her hand and looked at the door where minutes later another bed was pulled through and much to his relief it was indeed Clara.

He realised that she was in even more of a state than he had anticipated - especially when she was straight through the doors with one of the paramedics on the bed and then she was straight out again minutes later.

Clara was awake and in distress that he could see (which did actually make him feel a tiny bit better knowing that she was awake and okay) but he felt obliged to stay with Avia.

And they wouldn't let him anywhere near Clara anyway. That he pretty much knew. She wouldn't want him there anyway. He knows his own wife and he knows that Clara would rather him be with Avia right now.

'Where are they taking her?' John asked as a nurse rolled Avia out as well to go for an emergency x Ray.

'Who are you?'

'Her husband' John scoffed. 'And father of that child' he growled.

'Right. We're just checking for any head injury. That's all we really know. I'll let you know when I know more' she hummed. 'Apparently she hit her head quite hard? She also has a dislocated shoulder so that needs to go back into place'

'And the baby?'

'As far as we know baby is okay. George said that Clara said the baby was still kicking at the scene and that she hadn't stopped supporting her own airways for more than 20 seconds so I can't see why it wouldn't be okay' she explained as she wandered away.

John was just stood in awe.

Things were starting to go back to normal. Poppy had been permanently discharged, and was much better than she was, and Henry had , had his cast off two weeks ago - so things were looking up... he was even starting to come around to the baby and the pregnancy and now this again.

'Have you done a scan of the baby?' John asked getting a recurring sense of de ha vu suddenly.

All of a sudden he was back to 3 and a half years ago where he was standing in the waiting room helplessly whilst his wife was dying on the other side of the door.

All he could picture was Lucie and her being dead and Henry being born and it was enough to send John into a panic.

'Are you alright? Sir... Are you okay?' Someone asked but things were a little black for him at the moment.

He wanted to explain what was happening and that it was completely normal of him but he couldn't get the words or the breath out to do it so he instead sat down against the wall in the waiting room and let it ride out.

It wasn't the first panic attack these staff have seen or had to face and it certainly won't be the last - but John didn't know quite what else to do with himself.

With no Clara here to support him he was on his own.
