Chapter 123 - "Duty of Care..."

Clara's PoV

'Get them out first' I hummed closing my eyes.

'Oi. Don't close your eyes Clara. We need to keep you awake until we get out of here. We can't help you in here' George said slapping me just a little. 'Why them first?' He said keeping up conversation.

'I'm a teacher. I have a duty of care to look after them' I said determined. 'What about the parents. Have any of them been called?' I asked.

'I believe a colleague had informed the school. Parents will meet the students at the hospital. You three are going to a different hospital though' George explained as two firemen made their way down the couch.

I was surprised there was even any room left on here but they were here to lift the chairs obviously.

'My husband? He'll know where to go?'

'Of course. I'll make sure if it. What's his name?'

'John Smith'

'Is he Avia's Dad?'

'Yeah' I mumbled.

'So what's this one then? Second child?' He asked as I looked at him confused. I hadn't told him I was pregnant. It did t seem like pressing information because it was kicking. It was okay. 'Your colleague told us. Adrien? How many weeks?'

'22. And no. This is my fourth child' I huffed at his nosiness.

'4th? Wow you've been busy' he smirked. 'Right. I need you to stay still while we get these chairs lifted up. It will release your arm and Avia's legs. We'll pull her away and get her out. Then we'll have space to get to Amber there and pull her out and then we'll get you out? Okay?' He explained.

It sounded good to me.

I'd rather Avia out first than me.

'So how old are the rest of your kids?' He asked obviously distracting me from the fact they were lifting chairs off my broken bones and pulling Avia away.

'Evie's 9, Poppy is 4 and my Adopted son is 3' I explained.

'Alright were going to get a line in first and then push you onto the bored. The quicker we get you out the quicker we can all go home'

'I do know how it all works. My 4 year old spends a lot of time in and out of hospitals and ambulances. I'm rather surprised we've never met. Your about the only paramedic in London I haven't' I said as my breathing was starting to pick up quite heavily.

I wasn't panicking. It wasn't that. My chest just suddenly was feeling a lot more heavy than before.

George looked confused but didn't comment and I'm glad he didn't instead he just counted to three and moved me onto a board which was uncomfortable as hell - but was welcomed by me.

Then I breathed deeply again and he looked concerned.

'You having trouble breathing?'

'Yeah? Just gasping for breath that's all' I said as I gripped onto the board and tried to control my breathing but it hurt a lot as my eyes were starting to become droopy from lack of air.

'Stay awake. Remember stay awake. Keep your eyes open'

'That-- that's pretty hard when you can't-- can't breathe' I said breathlessly gasping for air.

Suddenly it wasn't just my head that was hurting my whole chest was pained and I felt shooting pains running up and down my stomach and spine.

I instantly wanted to clutch my stomach but turns out morning sickness was playing the same game with me still as it hasn't stopped the whole pregnancy yet or it could be the head wound? It was unknown.

I heard people suddenly rushing to unstrap me from my laying on my back position - I'm guessing because the priority was not letting me choke.

Mr Foster had been the one lumbered into going up to the school on a Sunday evening to over see the collection of the pupils from the coach.

He was the headteacher so had no choice but hadn't thought twice about closing the school three days earlier for safety reasons.

The roads were a bloody death trap and they all knew it.

When of course the coach was delayed and didn't arrive back at 6 as promised the parents concern began to grow.

John had left the kids with Lilly and was amidst the awaiting parents and decided to call Clara.

He knew she would know what was going on as the teacher. Most likely just terrible motorway traffic.

Especially in this weather. It was practically to be expected.

Either way he broke away from the parents where he got a call from Mr Davis hoping it was an update on how long they were going to be stuck in traffic for and if it would be worth getting the canteen open for parents to sit and keep warm in.

What he wasn't expecting was the call to be what it was.

Adrien had been the only one on the scene organising things and when ambulances turned up wanted to check all the pupils out.

So most students were being sent to one of the local hospitals in this area, which Mr Foster was going to inform parents.

There was however parents of two pupils who would have to make a trip to London hospital with injuries being far more severe and he didn't want to deliver that news.

'Quiet please' Mr Foster announced as the muttering of the adults dulled. 'There has been a delay in the arrival of the coach due to an incident earlier in the day and a collision with another car and a tree. I don't want any worrying 28 out of the 30 pupils are all walking wounded and have been sent to the local hospital here. They'll be arriving shortly so that's where you need to head. Mr Smith. Mr Jackson' he ushered.

Parents were panicking at this point but John looked up in shock.

'Avia and Amber are still on the coach and have more severe injuries but that's all I can say because that is all I know. They are going to the London hospital because it's closer. I suggest you travel up together?' Mr Foster days.

'Wait? Hold up? Who rang you? That teacher did you speak too?' John begged.

'Mr Davis and Miss Grayling' he hummed informatively.

'What about Miss Oswald? Is she walking wounded?' John said.

'No. She'll be going to the London hospital as well' he explained.
