Surgery

The next morning I woke up and headed for the hospital. As soon as I walked in Clemens found me.
" Ahhh dr. Shepherd good luck on your hand surgery today."
" thanks dr. Clemens." I shook his hand and went to the nurses desk.
" dr. Shepherd your room is ready." A nurse said.
I went into the closet and got dressed. The kids were jumping on the bed. When Jackson came in they sat down.
" hey I just wanted to pop in to see if you needed anything?"
" I'm good jackson how's my sister?"
" Lizzie? She's fine. Derek she came so she can give you a live nerve she agreed to this."
" I know but still it's my sister."
" Callie said she'll be ready in 10 minutes so I'm going to go get your sister ready."
" okay and thanks jackson."
He left leaving me and Mer alone.
" are you ready?" She asked
" sorta."
" fears, concerns?"
" it doesn't work."
" it will derek."
A couple of nurses came in.
" dr. Shepherd we are ready when you are."
" okay well let's get this over with."
I gave my kids and hugs and kisses and then my wife.
" I love you." I said
" I love you too."
" I'll be okay. We'll be okay."
" yeah we will."
I got on the gurney and headed for the OR. Callie came in.
" you ready derek?"
" are you ready?"
"Yes of course I am."
" then I am too."
She nodded and then I fell asleep. When I woke up I was all alone in my room. There was a note on my sheets.

Went to go get us food. Be back soon. Love you

I smiled. This is why I loved her.
" hey look who's awake!" Mer came in and gave me a kiss.
" yeah woke up a few minutes ago."
" oh that's good you weren't alone for long. Sorry you had to wake up with no one here i figured you were gonna be hungry."
" come here." I smiled at her and pulled her onto the bed.
" but aren't you hungry?.."
" we can eat in a few."
I kissed her hard.
" mer..."
" what's the matter?"
" I think it worked..."
She took my hand.
" are you serious?"
" yeah." We both had a huge smile on our face.
" what's going on?" Callie asked walking in.
" derek thinks the surgery worked."
" really??"
" yes."
" let's take a look. Mer can you step out for a few?"
" sure absolutely."
She left.
" okay I'm gonna take the cast off. Can you wiggle your fingers?"
I did
" how about bend them a little?"
I did.
" a little more?"
" can I just see how far I can go?"
" sure."
I was so close t making a fist but I couldn't go any further.
" derek...?"
" what?"
" I'd say you're at 80%."
" seriously?!"
" that's enough to do surgery."
" thank you!" I say up and gave her a hug and a kiss.
" anytime derek."
Mer came in.
" so...."
" he's at 80%"
" that's amazing!"
"Alright well I have some patients to see so I will check with you in a bit."
" thanks Callie."
" your welcome."
My sister came in next.
" Lizzie thank you." I said getting up.
" you're welcome derek."
" I really appreciate it like you may have saved my hand."
" I'm glad and I hope it gets better. Listen they're discharging me tomorrow and I'm heading home the day after that. Can I stay at you're place."
" stay as long as you please!"
She left as everyone came in to see what was going on. By the end of the night I was tired and I just wanted to get to bed.
The next day Lizzie and I were discharged and sent home. The next week she went home and my first day back at work was tomorrow.
