" Mer you gotta get dressed." I said dressed and sitting on the bed.
" I don't want to go."
" Meredith, it's your sisters funeral you have to go."
" I don't want to face the fact that my sister is actually gone."
" none of us do. But we have to. Now come on get ready. I'll go get the kids ready." I got up and left her to get dressed.
" daddy?"
" yes zola?"
" I miss Aunt Lexie."
" I know sweetheart we all do." I helped her get dress and then Bailey and Olivia. I sat them all down on the couch except for Olivia who was in her stroller. Meredith came downstairs.
" Ready to go?" She asked
" yeah I'll meet you in the car." She took my keys and the stroller and got in the car.
" zola hold your brother's hand and take him to the car for me please." She did as I asked. I shut all the lights off and walked out. I started to drive. I put my hand on Mer's thigh because she started to cry. We got there and we sat in our seats. My sister came next.
" I'm so sorry I'm late they called me into work." Amy said giving us hugs.
" they made you work?" Mer asked
" unfortunately." She said
I tapped on a chair for her to sit next to me. Owen, Cristina, Alex, Jo, Bailey, Ben, Ricard, Catherine Avery, Jackson, April, Callie, Arizona the board and many other faculty members came and gave us hugs. Chairs were filled that people had to stand.
" Derek?" Meredith tapped me.
" yeah"
" where's Mark?"
" what do you mean?"
" I mean Mark isn't here so where is he?"
" I'll go see if he wandered off somewhere." I gave her a kiss on the cheek and stood up to see if he was sitting amongst the crowd. But he wasn't.
" Jackson, Alex let's take a walk." They got up and followed me.
" where we going?" Alex asked
" have any of you heard from Mark?"
" no why?" Jackson asked
" because he isn't here."
" but Elizabeth is here." Jackson said.
" yeah that's because Arizona brought her." Alex said.
We all picked up the phone an called him one after another but we all got the same message.
" okay Jackson call him back and leave a message." I said
" why me?"
" well he never really liked me." Alex said
" and I'll leave a message too." I said
" hi this is Mark leave a message and I'll get back to you." The phone beeped and Jackson left a message.
" hi Mark, it's me Jackson. Listen give me a call when you get this message we need to talk." He said. He hung up the phone. " your turn." He said.
I dialed his number and got his voicemail.
" Mark, it's Derek. Listen bud where are you? You've been gone for a few days and we are all worried. Come home we need you. Call me when you get this bye."
We went to go sit in our seats. They asked Meredith to make a speech.
" many of you may know that I'm not that good with family. Growing up with just a mother figure who didn't even want me was a little rough. With my father living his own life I was basically on my own. That was until I met Lexi my half sister. I'm gonna be honest I didn't like her at first. I wanted nothing to do with her. But as I got to know her I began to feel the love that I never had in my life. She brought my only niece into my life in which I am entirely greatful. So thank you Lexi for teaching me what family really is. You were the best sister I could ask for." Mer gave her father a hug and say back down. Her dad stepped up. " I started off with one daughter. Then I had two more girls. And people told me that I was lucky and some told me I wasn't so lucky. But now I can see that I am the luckiest man on earth. When Lexi had told me she was goin to go work with her half sister I told her it wasn't such a good idea. But now I can see that she brought us all together. She made the puzzle pieces into a puzzle. Now not only do I have five grandchildren but I also have a family that I know will never leave my side. Thank you Lexi I love you." He sat down and others made speeches. Then it was my turn.
" well, I grew up with four sisters so I knew how to speak girl. The thing was she grew up with sisters too so I had to teach her to understand boy language and why we do the things we do. She was a good kid. I didn't know she was Meredith's sister until we did the DNA test. I welcomed her with open arms. She taught me so much while she was here. I miss you Lex. Don't worry we'll keep an eye on Elizabeth and Mark."
