Two months later

I woke up and got ready for work. Today was the day I was going back to work since the accident. I was still staying with Alex and Jo. When I went to wake up the kids they were already up. I went downstairs to see a note on the counter.

We took the kids to daycare so you didn't have to handle so much on your first day back. Breakfast in the oven. Can't wait to see you. Love you.

I giggled. I got ready and headed out the door. When I walked into the attending a lounge all I heard was a big " SURPRISE!"
" aww thanks guys!"
" how you feeling Dr. Grey?" Edwards asked.
" good. I feel good Edwards. Thank you."
"GREY! I'm so glad you're back!" Owen chirped giving me a hug.
" thanks Owen!"
" hey how's your leg?" Cristina asked giving me a hug.
" still hurts every once in a while but besides that no pain."
" that's good glad to have my person back in action."
" me too."
" GREY!" Mark yelled.
" SLOAN!" I yelled back. Addison was walking with him and another man.
" grey, this is Addison's husband Jack."
" hi, I'm Meredith Grey it's nice to meet you."
" Jack Harvard. Nice to meet you too."
" Ha..Harvard as in the University?"
" yes ma'am."
" so you're Addison Forbes  Montgomery- Harvard?"
" yes Grey I am."
" that name couldn't have more money in it if it tried." We all laughed. The room started to clear out when we noticed one person left over.
" Mer.." Owen said pointing to the back of the room.
" what?" I turned around to see Derek standing there.
" hey."
" hi."
" I'm glad you're back."
" me too."
" can we talk?"
" yeah."
" no." Alex said
" Alex!" I nudged him.
" it's not a good idea."
" I'm not gonna hurt her Karev."
" mmhmm." Alex said staring at him.
" come on Alex. Yell if you need us." Jackson said.
We stood there waiting for someone to say something.
" oh sit you should rest." He said pulling out a chair for me.
" thanks."
" so your legs better?"
" yeah no more crutches."
" that's good. How's the kids?"
" hanging in there. They miss you."
" I miss them. Meredith I miss you."
He put a hand on my leg.
" Derek we can't. It's not that I don't want to I just can't."
" but you can."
" no Derek can't you see that you hurt me even if you were drunk you still hurt me!"
" I know and I'm gonna be sorry for that my entire life."
" see, I don't want you to be sorry for the rest of your life. I want us to move on and I think in order to do that we need to take a break. I'm sorry."
" Meredith..."
I got up and headed for the door.
" I'm still in love with you." Derek said as I opened the door.
" I know." I walked out. Everybody was waiting outside the door. I walked to the attending lounge without them following me. I say there for a good 15 minutes before I got pages to the ER. I couldn't run so I had to try to speed walk.
" who paged?" I asked
" Me. Sorry Grey I forgot." Jackson said.
" don't be I'd rather you page me than not. So what's going on?"
" 36 year old male fell off a roof we think he might have internal injuries along with a burn."
" a burn?"
" yeah he was trying to tar his roof when he fell."
" right into tar..."
" right into it."
" is he responsive."
" no passed out on the ride here."
Firefighters and EMTs were in the ER.
" is he going to be okay doctor?" One asked.
" we don't know yet we are sending him up for tests and we will give you an update as soon as possible."
We ran to run tests on the guy.
" Grey they're coming up."
" oh no."
" that doesn't look good."
" because it's not."
" is that?"
" yeah it is."
I turned towards the nurse in the room.
" page Dr. Yang and Dr.Shepherd."
" right away doctor."
Cristina ran in.
" what's going on guys?"
" look." I said
" is that?"
" yeah. Burned right through his skin."
" how long was he in there for?" Jackson asked.
" long enough." Cristina said.
" guys you paged?" I hear his voice and looked up. Derek.
" oh no we got it from here." Cristina said
" guys you pages Dr.Shepherd." He was staring at me the entire time.
" we meant your sister." Jackson said.
Owen came in.
" I heard, do we need the cops?" Owen asked then he saw Derek and looked at me. " Derek why don't you let your sister take this one and work down in the ER."
" no stop. Okay Owen get the cops and Dr.Shepherd can stay here and help with this case. It's fine." I said

DEREK POV:

' Dr.Shepherd?' That felt like a knife to the heart.
" why are we calling the cops?" I asked
" look." Cristina said. I went to stand by Meredith but she moved away. I looked at her but she was just staring at the floor.
" what burn was this bad that it burnt through his skin?"
" tar." Jackson said.
" I need a head scan. Meredith can you help me out on this one?"
" no. I don't even know if Owen is going to let me into this surgery but if he is I'm doing it." She walked out.
" the scans are up." Cristina said walking out.
" page us when you're done here." Jackson said following cristina.
' Great. Everyone hates me.' I thought as I looked at the scans.
" shit." I said. I ran after them.
" GUYS! AVERY! YANG! GET GREY WE NEED TO GET TO THE OR NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!"
We all ran up to the OR.
