(I'm cryin' 'cause I love you)

"She's back? You're not joking," Keefe begged, tears rolling down his cheeks. His imparter view panned over to a torn up girl staggering onto a Healing Center cot, open wounds canvassing her body. In that second his heart split. Right. Down. The middle.

He channeled all of this feeling, shards of energy, into his legs, racing down the Foxfire spiral staircase before deciding to jump right down the empty spot in the middle, levitating for a beat before leaping towards Elwin's kingdom.

Winded, his breathing came in great ragged pieces, sweat replacing tears. He swung through the doorway, forcing his way through the crowd to the blonde girl barely conscious. Sophie. In all of her bloodstained glory.

Her eyes close, and he waits. Every hour fueling his panic, the knot of desperation intermingling with blinding fear, all tied up to become unbearable.

"How could you?"

The sob was a last-ditch appeal to the world to somehow turn back time so it didn't have to be this way. So the suffering could end.

Sophie was the one who taught them to never take the Neverseen's notes at face value. That because they wanted you to come alone, it meant you'd be more powerful as a team. Then why had she listened to the words of the enemy? Why had she given up?

"Why do you care," she rasped, seizing with the effort of the syllables.

Keefe wasn't phased by the fact she was awake, bursting with everything he couldn't hold in.

"How couldn't I," he cried out, turning away.

Sophie grabbed his arm, grip tightening.

"Tell me why," she rasped, urgency a current in her voice.

"Because I love you! Why is that so hard to understand?!"

"Because it means I did the right thing. Because everyone I love gets hurt, and if they love me it makes everything worse."

Keefe's eyes widened with terror, skin paling.

"Sophie, what did you do."

Her heartbeat slowed.

"Nothing you wouldn't have."

Elwin wheeled her cot out too fast for Keefe to process, a team of physicians shouting out in a blur. Keefe sank to the floor.

"What did you do."

(I know this absolutely wasn't what BookLoverForever27 had in mind, but I'm projecting onto the characters and it's becoming a problem. Next up is a request from my KOTLC requests book, but I'm making it Sokeefe because I promised updates.)
