Birds Can Only Fly So Far

Blasting out of the dome was almost too easy, shards of pear green glass raining down below her, only to fall exactly where Sophie intended them too. Thanks to telekinesis, of course. Pieces splayed out like the wings of a bird. Not the symbol she had originally chosen.

Back when she was coming into herself, just a year ago, she had set fire to a Neverseen storehouse. It couldn't possibly have bode well, yet she didn't regret it even as she headed to the very people she had doomed.

Through the void to a meadow, to a lake, to an island. With every teleportation, Sophie dropped another tracker, another ability restrictor, gritting her teeth as the mechanical disc under her skin tore outward, slick with blood.

Freedom was worth the pain.

Finally, Sophie slid down to the rocky dirt, eyes fluttering closed. God, what if Lady Gisela was in the bathroom?

Yeah, not risking it.

Hey, are you indisposed?

Sophie smiled serenely as the Lady let out a string of rather un-ladylike words. It was nice to know the woman wasn't as composed on the inside compared to what she seemed on the outside.

No, I am not, came the irked voice of Keefe's dear mother. Whatever for?

The escapee grinned as she cut off the transmission, exposing another explosion of elvin curses.

The mental picture provided by the end of the connection came to focus in Sophie's mind, concentration seeping through every aspect. Damp blonde hair in a coil, wine-red linen nightgown, a sheepskin rug, clean-cut corners of marble walls, and gleaming dark oak wood floors.

Extravagant black wax candles rested on a shining bronze circle hanging from the ceiling. A tuscan bronze glass bowl stood below an ornate mirror, a large, luxurious four-poster bed centered in the center of the room.

What kind of demented person puts their bed in the middle of the room?Right. Gisela.

Sophie couldn't help but notice the insane amount of decorative pillows atop a fluffy ivory duvet, surrounded by black velvet curtains.

How pretentious.

Sophie launched herself through the tear in reality, lightly stepping onto the rug. Pretentious, yes, but really, really soft.

"You know," Sophie commented, eternally thanking the world for not letting her trip. "I would have thought you'd have put up teleporting blockades by now."

Lady Gisela's eyes narrowed.

"We did."

Huh.

Sophie clapped her hands together briskly.

"Well, I'm living with you now!"

Gisela starts to laugh, delicately covering her mouth before throwing manners to the wind. Her laughter faded out as Sophie stared on.

"You can't be serious," Lady Gisela stated incredulously. "What would I get out of it?"

Ah, so that was what Sophie forgot.

Oops.

( Well, Sophie definitely thought that through. )
