(I need it to stop, and I want to be able to open up, but my feelings are fatal.)
"I think I love Keefe." Ro examined her ice blue nails.
"Think. And now you realize this! Do you have any idea how hard it was to watch him suffer and hide in Fitz's shadow?" Ro took a hissing deep breath. "No, I suppose you don't." Something changed in Ro's Mama Bear expression and Auntie Ro was back. "Honey, why don't you just tell him?"
"I can't just say that and walk away!"
"Don't worry, I'll be rooting for a smooch the entire time." Something crashed to the ground in the other room and a door swung open revealing a stony-faced Lord Cassius standing next to a very surprised Keefe among broken glass.
Sophie jumped up in battle position before freezing.
There was a moment where the only thoughts going through her head was lol nope. Can't deal with this today.
Remember those moments in cartoons, or comics when someone is listening at the door when it it opens? Like in the movie wish dragon when the entire neighborhood is pressed in close? These were the vibes Sophie was getting.
Except she wanted to curl up into a ball and die. Was her face tomato red yet?
"Oh no missy, that phase is long gone," Ro wheezed, cackling.
"Did you know they were there the whole time," Sophie exclaimed, trying very hard not to even look in Keefe's direction. Meeting his eyes would just about finish her off.
Soft footsteps steadily approached, the weight behind them not changing the memorized tone. Slender fingers caught hers, a shape so familiar denying the owner is impossible. Gentle and firm, their hands twined together.
"Then don't walk away," Keefe whispered. "Because I can't come back from that the same."
It would be a twisted hope choking his heart. Hope and hopelessness. What a pair.
"I-I won't," Sophie promised. "I couldn't survive it."
Were the tears of joy or of sorrow? They were allowed to feel, no matter what others told them. Emotions would never wait for a good time. Neither could they.
Cassius coughed delicately.
"You two make me sick." The Lord walked away primly, Ro following with a murderous look in her eyes.
"Should we do something about that," Sophie asked, as she couldn't care less.
Keefe snorted.
"Absolutely not."
