We need to talk. The transmission came out of nowhere. Keefe was sure Sophie could see his thoughts racing, and desperately hoped Telepaths were really bad at discerning feelings.
Where to?
I hadn't really planned out that far. . .
Moonrise Waters? Completely random.
The healing pools?
Yup.
Okay.
Minutes later, they were both at the mineral pools of Moonrise Waters.
"So." Keefe almost facepalmed at his stupidity.
"So."
"You wanted to talk?"
"Yeah." Sopie cannonballed into the water, feeling like Amy. "I was memory logging-you know, everything since I came to the Lost Cities, like the Council wanted-and I noticed something." Sophie stared at her hands, fiddling with her broken panic switch. Oh. So this was why she wanted to talk.
Keefe wrapped his arm around Sophie. "We've all found some pretty freaky stuff in our memories. Just look at me! It's gonna be okay." Sophie laughed, subconsciously skimming her fingers down the arm reassuring her.
"No, no, its nothing bad. It's things like this. These moments." Keefe's heart skipped two beats. Sophie twisted up to look at Keefe, wide-eyed. "Keefe. . . do you love me?" Keefe brushed a lock of Sophie's hair back. He sighed.
"Oh Sophie, what do you think?" When Sophie remained silent, he tried again. "Who wouldn't love you?" Sophie bit her lip. Keefe realized his mistake. "Anyone who doesn't love you is an idiot."
"You really think so?"
Will this answer your question? Keefe dove down off the semi-submerged ledge, holding out his arms to Sophie. "If you think you love me, trust me." With absolutely no hesitation, Sophie jumped. They sank just below the surface. May I?
You may.
Then her lips were on his, and his were on hers. There was nothing awkward or wrong-feeling about the kiss. What scared Sophie was the wanting behind it. You can want something but not need it. You can need something and not want it. Pure terror flooded Sophie right then. Because she did not just need Keefe. She wanted him. And that was the most dangerous combination of all. Not longing- a hunger. That was why she pulled away. She was afraid of doing more. She was afraid of doing something she couldn't brush off. Something she couldn't take back without a heartbreak.
Every emotion Sophie had was coursing through Keefe, courtesy of empathy. He wasn't offended. In fact, he felt the same way. They would stick to the simple things. They tipped their heads backward, relishing the sweet air.
"I'm glad I trusted you."
"Me too." Keefe hopped up on the ledge and extended his hand. Sophie in turn ynked him down, taking his seat. "Yeesh, we can share." Keefe sat, and Sophie shifted so she was in his lap.
"I like this," Sophie whispered.
"Me too Sophie. Me too."
