Sophie rushed through the halls of Foxfire, her black cape swishing behind her. At least she thought it was black. You could never tell until you looked into the eyes of your soulmate and Sophie couldn't remember the color label. She had just come from Lady Galvin's classroom and ruined both her Alchemy mentor's cape and assignment. Not to mention the burn on her hand, but Sophie barely noticed that.
"Are you lost?" The boy's deep voice brought her out of her trance. He wore a black and white level four uniform and was sprawled across a bench, watching her with curious ice blue eyes.
"How did you know?" He smirked.
"Its the middle of session. Either you're lost or you're ditching-and clearly you aren't ditching."
"Why couldn't I be ditching," she asked, not really sure why she was arguing. It was just something about that boy.
"Are you?"
"No," she admitted.
"You're the new girl, aren't you." An odd smile danced on his lips and it gave way to a crooked grin as he brought his guard back up.
She sighed and nodded.
"I'm Keefe."
"Sophie-but I'm sure you knew that." He laughed.
"Nothing much happens around here, so you're the biggest news to hit the academy since The Great Gulon Incident three years ago-which, by the way, I had nothing to do with." He flashed a playfully wicked smile. "But that's not a bad thing. I've always enjoyed being the center of attention."
Sophie didn't doubt that. From his amazingly cute disheveled blond hair to the way he'd rolled up his sleeves and left his shirt untucked, she could tell-he was cool. Probably popular too. So why was he talking to her? She almost asked him but stopped at the last second.
"So, I assume you're ditching."
"Absolutely. Now I get to meet the mysterious new girl, so it paid off." Sophie blushed, looking away from the twinkle in Keefe's eyes.
"I'm hardly mysterious." He ignored that.
"Does the mysterious miss F want a tour of the school?" Sophie wanted that so much. But instead, she tilted her head and said", maybe later."
"I would brag about being friends with the Keefster if I were you."
Friends?
Since when did cool, cute boys want to be her friend? Not that she was complaining.
"Are you hurt?" Keefe's eyes were directed toward her burn, a note of concern in his voice. Sophie nodded, remembering the little incident with the whapping.
"I'll take you to the healing center." This time Sophie couldn't stop herself.
"Why?"
"I'll get a hall pass. Plus, I get to be with you." He stood up and She started walking, but Keefe took her hand and gently tugged her the other way. "The Healing Center's this way." And so they walked, hand in hand. Only later Sophie would realize Keefe's jerkin was green. A color she had never seen before.
