Dex looked up from his cloning experiment at the sound of the burping door to see a panting Keefe rush in, his rumpled collar soaked. Lifting his goggles off, Dex gave Keefe his full attention.
"Do you need help, Keefe?" The rather handsome boy- NOT THAT DEX NOTICED THAT- nodded, breathless.
"I-I did s-something to F-F-Fitzy, and he's ch-chasing me." His breath clearly hadn't been restored. "I need to look different." Dex grabbed Curly Dew, Absolutely Auburn, and Freckle Juice.
"Remember-"
"Don't drink them all at once." Keefe downed Elixer after Elixer, turning his majestic hair into auburn curls, and putting a smattering of freckles all over his face. Yet somehow Dex could still sense the real Keefe inside, through the elixirs and smirks. There was a scared boy inside, just like him.
"You should pretend to buy . . . THIS!" Dex held up an alchemy midterm textbook a level above Keefe's triumphantly.
"You're right, I would never buy that." Keefe held out his birth fund just as Fitz ran past the shop window, the crisis officially averted. Dex scratched the back of his neck.
"Do you wanna go to my room? I mean, you don't have to, I don't ca-"
"Sure." Keefe ran a hand through his new locks, bounding up the stairs behind Dex.
Dex opened the door to his lab-like room, abnormally neat for all the explosions that occurred. Keefe's gaze was immediately drawn to the gooey green sludge in a glass basin.
"What's that!"
Dex walked over to the table, pouring reactive substances into the vat, with Keefe centimeters away, gently breathing over his shoulder. The goo vibrated before levitating, forming into a little person, and dancing. Then it exploded.
"Woah." Dex had goo all over his face, but Keefe rested his chin on Dex's shoulder to watch the sludge-person form again, so it was all worth it. Including leaving the checkout desk unpersoned.
