An Illusion Of Safety

( Now did you think it all through? All these things will catch up to you. )

Sophie cringes, hands fluttering around the gash at Keefe's wrist. The throwing star hadn't nicked the surface, but sank into where veins intersected. From what biology had taught her, several key arteries are located there.

"You're losing blood quickly," Sophie hyperventilates, her breathing in hissing gasps. "What's your type?" Sophie's mind flashed to the worst, elves don't teach blood types, the healers can't save him because it was multiple major arteries-

Keefe's face grew soft, he looked up at Sophie's crease in between her eyebrows with a small smile.

"Well, kind. Brave, compassionate, humble, forgiving," Keefe's voice cracks. He'll never stop reliving that moment. She wasn't supposed to be there. But the amazing person she was noticed how depressed he was.

Is it really guilt that breaks you? Or is it crushing regret? Seeing the lever in front of you, but being frozen, unable to save yourself? Though it isn't yourself you save. It's the trust she has in you.

"Keefe, don't be an idiot," Sophie was desperately jabbing at Elwin's panic summons. "Your blood type." His answer had crushed her anyway. Though she didn't even know why.

Keefe's eyebrows drew together, the question confusing him. He looked down at the red spilling out, contemplating.

"Crimson?"

Sophie curses, eyes flaring.

She tenderly wrapped her cape around the deep slice, grabbing on to Keefe's uninjured hand.

"On the count of three, we run," she orders, gritting her teeth. The carnage around the pair is put on the sidelines as they tense forward.

One

Two

Three

Sophie and Keefe race forward, not channeling for fear it might take away from the energy Keefe was already losing.

The crack of the void is merely a faded shattering, safety moments away.

They never reach it.

And they never will.

Safety was always an illusion.

It was Keefe's turn to cuss as the Neverseen eye is dripped on the floor with blood, Elwin's glasses askew in the center.

If this was the message being sent.

Arson wasn't enough.

( Seriously though, if the Neverseen should target anyone, it should be Elwin and Livvy. The healers who fix up the crew after battles. Then it'll be easier to kill the crew, while they're still damaged. Why the Neverseen didn't come for Fitz and Sophie in the healing center, I'll never understand. Perhaps . . . Elwin is with them?!?!? Ooooh, a traitor. )
