Feel with my Heart & not with my Head

Sophie stared down at the heavy book in her hands. Times like these made Sophie wish she was an empath. The Heart Of The Matter had a lot of fluffy bragging around it, but once it got to the point...well, Sophie didn't understand herself at all.

Think with your head or don't listen to it at all? Feel with your heart or stop trusting yourself? Now she knew why Keefe hated the work so much. It was immensely confusing. And also way to close to home.  Lord Cassius's example used a love triangle. One that was remarkably similar to what Sophie was lying to herself about.

The thing is, she had manifested as an empath two days ago after Keefe came out of his cocoon. She hadn't told anybody, but she was pretty sure Keefe could tell. The ability didn't help her understand her own feelings at all.

Sophie had been taught her heart was just an organ pumping blood through her body. Here the hart was the emotional center, and she didn't know what to believe. It seemed easier to believe in elves than to think her heart was what felt. Sophie reopened the book to page 792, trying to muck her way through the fancy words and runes.

"Sooophieeeeeee. I never get to spend any time with you. Ella hasn't even met Lady Sassyfur!" Biana was complaining again. After she had come to visit while Sophie was doing Black Swan homework, Biana had met Vertina, her new best friend. But surprisingly, even Biana had a breaking point.

Sophie pushed the volume over to Biana, pointing at a  paragraph with an abundance of runes.

"Can you translate again?" Biana sighed, flipping her hair, and set the book in her lap.

"If a pink spike is to rage as a doughy empath is to fire, the Butterblast Taciturn Society-" Biana put her hands in the air at Sophie's glare. "Fine, fine, I'll do the real thing. The emotional core is where you feel, sensed by empaths. There are layers to what some label as emotions. What you think you feel and what you feel. Oh my unmapped stars, this is boring."

"I think I understand now!" Biana looked at Sophie, noting the shift in her eyes and nodded.

"You do. Even though I still don't."

"I need Stina."

"Stina!" Sophie was already dialing.

"Stina I need you to read my emotions."

"Look, if this is about boy problems I-" Sophie hung up on the girl. Soon enough there was a sharp knock at her bedroom door.

"You owe me." Sophie just offered her hand and Stina hesitantly took it.

"Tell me if I'm feeling with my heart or my head." Stina nodded, her tight curls bouncing.

Sophie filled her mind with teal eyes, tiny boxes, and cognate rings.

"Head." Sophie now thought of precious paintings, leaning on his shoulder, and a red porch swing. "Heart." Sophie stood there, stunned.

"I guess it's time to invite Keefe over, huh," Biana said with a mischievous smile.
