Keeper Of Wonderland | Preface

Blurry, fractured memories swirled through Sophie's mind, her eyes barely registering the bitten eat me cakes before her. It took a moment for her to taste the cloyingly sweet liquid in the back of her throat, which could only come from the empty drink me bottle before her. She had been drugged. Again.

Her eyes burned hot, tears dried up. Would Biana really betray her like this? All to please her father? Was being a queen really that bad?

Sophie knew the answer shouldn't be yes.

A pounding headache shot through her fear, pain hammering at her mind. The sedative pulled her towards dreamless oblivion, but she fought back, clinging to a memory that could shine a pinprick of light into the inky-black darkness. The Clubs. The Clubs would come to look for her.

They probably didn't even notice she was gone.

Were her captors going to kill her? Would the Neverseen really destroy their own creation? What was the point of Project Jabberwocky then? What was the point of the Everblaze?

Rough rope pressed against her wrists and ankles. Sophie opened her mouth to scream-

A wave of cold washed over her as she bit down on a silken gag, stifling her cry for help. She was a hostage.

And no one was coming to save her.

Oh, Calla. Maybe if Sophie hadn't noticed her that day on the riverbank, none of this could have happened.

No. She knew it'd been too late even then. The white fires were already burning-curving towards her world and filling the sky with sticky, sweet smoke.

The spark before the blaze.

Wonderland asunder.
