Grady and Edaline cringed when Sophie's screams hit another high note, rubbing the bags under their eyes. Sophie's echoes were back in her dreams but didn't affect her as they did before. This time the monster was torturing her as she slept, which meant Grady and Edaline wouldn't be sleeping for a while.
Sophie writhed and Edaline conjured a blanket away so Sophie wasn't strangling herself. Sophie threw herself into the wall next to her and repeatedly banged her forehead of the headboard. Sophie had gained many bruises and marks from her night seizures and it greatly affected her throughout the day. She was jumpy and silent, always on edge, looking around corners, and always doubting herself. Team Valiant and Sophie's friends were suffering along with her. Especially Keefe.
Edaline couldn't help thinking the boy blamed himself, though it clearly had nothing to do with him. Silveny couldn't help and Fitz attempting to monitor Sophie's dreams only made it worse, with the girl clawing at her head. Keefe had asked about seventy times to try and help but Grady selfishly kept him away, not wanting Keefe alone with Sophie while she was sleeping.
But they couldn't watch their little girl hurt herself again, and every shrill shriek was another hole in their parental defenses. Elwin had tried to convince Grady on numerous accounts, and each time, Grady refused. Edaline couldn't do it anymore.
"Grady." Eda's voice cracked on the last syllable. He looked up, defeated. Once Edaline had something to say it was final. And Grady knew how important this was. He also knew Keefe would never hurt his daughter.
As soon as they called Keefe, he was in Sophie's bedroom doorway, imparter in hand. They left, collapsing in their bed and left Keefe to work his magic. Keefe crept over to Sophie, careful not to wake her, and slid her gloves off, then clicked her fingers together. He sent calming blue breezes along with pink waves of something he had never dared to send before. Love. Sophie stopped hurting herself, but Keefe could tell from the emotions spiking off her, she was far from peaceful.
So he climbed into the bed and held her, careful to stay on top of the covers. Sophie instantly relaxed, making an adorable sound in the back of her throat as warm breath gently wafted out her lips.
"I'm here Foster, I'm here." Sophie subconsciously curled into him, tightening her grip on his arm. Keefe slid Ella between the crook of his elbow and Sophie's waist so Grady would have no complaints, and finger-combed her blond hair. The cute little noise escaped Sophie again and Keefe smiled into her hair. They stayed like that the rest of the night and the monster didn't dare return.
Keefe would later be told they had slept for a week, and ignorant people laughed about Keefe not being able to rest when Sophie couldn't sleep. But such was the way of their world, and Edaline knew that would never change. And she would never want it to.
