Sophie had cried and screamed until she couldn't whisper or sob anymore. She pushed her mind through the shadowflux, magsidian, ethertine, reactive cocoon, and let herself linger on Keefe's face. Even with bedhead, his mussed blond hair was perfect. Sophie's hands quivered as her body tried to cry, but Sophie's tear ducts had emptied. The only time she had left the Healing Center was to see Oralie. With the cache. But then the cocoon started to melt and harden, and Sophie returned to the endless cycle of somnalene and tearing out eyelashes.

"Sophie, you have to let someone see you. This isn't healthy." Sophie snorted, a snotty, sniffly sound. Elwin was a school doctor, not a psychologist.

You have a point.

"I do, don't I." Elwin tweaked his mad-scientist-techie goggles and inspected Keefe's cocoon for the fiftieth time that day.

I'll call Amy. Sophie had given Amy an Imparter in case she was ever in danger, plus it helped to see Amy's face as more a reality while transmitting than just imagining it.

"Eh, close enough." Elwin backed away from Keefe and hugged Bullhorn tight. The banshee hadn't been anywhere near the patient, but the fluffy white animal was kind of Elwin's emotional support. The Banshee didn't want anything to with Sophie, however.

Sophie's trembling hand lifted her sleek silver imparter up while the other called Amy manually.

"Sophie?" Amy's wavy brown hair bounced up and down as she locked herself in a school bathroom stall. Sophie twisted the device so Amy could see the darkness Keefe was trapped in.

"Its a burrito."

Don't be stupid. Sophie waved a finger and the substance shifted away so Keefe's face was visible.

"So the hot lovesick puppy got into some trouble?" Sophie spluttered, watching Amy chew on a chocolate bar.

WHAT!

"Never mind, never mind," Amy waved Sophie off and chomped on another square. "Have you tried the Disney approach?"

What on earth is the Disney approach?

"Snow White, Sleeping beauty. You watched all of those with me."

Yeah, and you criticized the animation and plot the entire time, blurting out the endings.

"Sophieeee. What do those have in common?" Sophie's eyes widened and she cringed at realizing Amy's intentions.

No.

"Whaat. It's worth a try."

If we were in a fairytale people wouldn't have died.

"It can't hurt. I've read a lot of romance novels lately-"

AMY!-

"And you should pour your feelings into it."

Into kissing him. You can't be considering this.  Amy popped the rest of the treat into her mouth, nodding, and crumpling the wrapper. She stood up and grabbed her backpack.

"I gotta go, my teacher is really strict." Amy's finger came closer on the screen and she tapped to end the call.

I love you, Amy.

Sophie's hand went to her Team Valiant pin and she fiddled with the catch, throwing it into Elwin's pegboard. What good was Team Valiant if they didn't do anything? The pegboard shook, but the pin stayed firmly inside, not ready to let go. Just like Sophie wasn't ready to let go of Keefe.

Sophie stood up, her knees wavering as she leaned on Keefe's cot. She cleared the shadowflux mixture away from his face and hesitated. Was she really doing this? Yes. But it would hurt all the much more if it failed.

Sophie cradled Keefe's head in her hands, gently lifting it out of the fluctuating material. His face was an inch away from his, and she could feel his even breathing on her lips. Something in Sophie's heart pulled and she gave in, softly touching her lips to Keefe's. Out flowed a replica the missing and needing swimming inside, and the love, hope, and wanting dove through as well. Even though she knew Keefe was in a coma, she could have sworn  Keefe's lips warmed and he came a little closer. It was an-an aura of feelings sparking between Sophie's tremulous stance and Keefe's limp body.

Sophie pulled away, rivulets of sorrow flowing down her cheeks and collapsed, as nothing changed.

"Sophie?" The sobbing mess on the floor couldn't tell who it was at all, not able to discern anyone's voice. She heard a rustling of blankets and someone rasped.

"Foster?"
