~10 years earlier~
Sophie had finally been adopted. Her new parents, Grady and Edaline Ruwen, seemed kind. They also lived on the rich side of town. Which was the real reason six-year-old Sophie was worried. Would the other kids like her? She'd never had even one friend. She looked up into the tree next door, under a house that resembled a skyscraper. There was someone her age wearing a batman costume, complete with all nine abs. As the blond boy scrambled down, his marvel shoes lit up. Marvel shoes with a DC costume? Whatever. He walked over to the car, knocking on the window.
"Who's there?" Keefe puffed up his chest to make the abs look better.
"Batman." Sophie eased open the car door, tripping on the tiny ledge. He caught her, wobbling. "I'm Batman, so I can be your hero any day." Sophie laughed, a high, pealing sound. They had been fast friends ever since.
~Present day~
Keefe stared through his window to watch Sophie's clumsy dancing, trying to muffle his laughter. It didn't work. Sophie caught his eye, gave him a knowing look, and bagan their dance. A mix of the robot, cupid shuffle, the wiggle, and a standing up worm. The last part looked more like a fish out of water.
Keefe jumped in, though jumped in was a crude description. It was like he had been doing it with Sophie the whole time, perfectly in sync. They flopped onto their beds, placed at the best angle for window sleepovers. Just to be at the same height, they both had two mattresses.
Sophie grabbed a notepad, scribbling with an adorable crease on her forehead. She stopped and erased the whole thing, just to write three words in marker. Keefe watched as she slid the paper under her bed. She held a different sign to the window.
Are you okay?
Keefe sighed. He had found out his mom may be dead that morning. She'd been missing for a while, conveniently disappearing just after they learned she was part of a terrorist group. Fun. Sophie held a new sign to the window.
Stupid question. Forget it.
Then.
Do you need me? Keefe took out the nearest writing tool, a fat black expo marker, and scrawled three letters.
Yes.
They both tied their curtains back, or at least Sophie did. Keefe just took his off the rod. Sophie fell asleep rather quickly, peaceful, her hair gradually becoming a pineapple. Keefe watched her until he fell asleep, taken by dreamland that consisted of brown eyes with gold flecks, in the early hours of the morning.
