it gets different when Keefe says her name

Dex walks up to the crew after a planning session with the Black Swan and Sophie grits her teeth.

"Fitz, Keefe, please step to that line, "Dex said pleasantly.

"If you try to hurt he-" Keefe's hands clenched into fists.

"I won't." Dex gave Keefe a fake smile and gestured at the line marked in chalk. The pair walked to the line and Dex pushed them about a meter apart. He handed Sophie what looked like a supercharged melder.

"Shoot either Keefe or Fitz, or everyone dies." Neverseen members stepped out from behind trees, appeared in plain sight, some levitating until there was what seemed like a dome of evil. Sophie stared at the melder and leveled the gun at the space between.

"Okay." Silent tears rolled down Sophie's face as she popped the safety wire. She backed up.

"Sophie, don't do this." Fitz was glaring at Dex.

"Sophie?" The girl in question quivered when Keefe whispered the words.

"You said my name." Sophie aimed the melder at Keefe and fired. "It's not charged!" Dex grimly smiled.

"Well, now you know who she likes better." The Neverseen swooped down and captured Fitz in less than a second and he was shadow-leaped away.

"You went through with that," Keefe whispered. "Why." Keefe shook. "I knew I don't mean much to you but-"

"I knew what they were going to do. Dex told me." Keefe froze, stock-still.

"And you chose to save...me." Tears rolled down Keefe's cheeks and he fell down against a tree while the rest of the crew watched.

"Well, who else was I going to pi-" Keefe abruptly kissed her, awed that Sophie would ever choose him, the broken boy, over the golden one. It was Sophie's turn to freeze as she felt Keefe's lips on hers until she gave in to the moment and melted into the sweet sanctuary. Keefe had always kept the world at bay.

Marella was watching, not even blinking along with Biana while the rest of the group turned away. Sophie pulled away and Marella and Biana sighed in sync. 

"I wasn't expecting that," Sophie whispered.

"Neither was I."
