( Love, you're not alone. 'Cause I'm gonna stand by you. )
"I just . . . can't deal with it all right now," Dex whispered, holding his imparter close to his chest. It was his lifeline. "It's too much for my to handle. I mean, I'm only one person. And sometimes I don't feel like I deserve to be here at all."
"Woah there! Don't go talking about my boyfriend like that. Are the triplets home," Keefe asked, a concerned look softening his expression.
"No."
"Don't hang up."
Keefe packed a small satchel, scrambling out to the leapmaster secured to the porch overhang. Calling out for Rimeshire, he jolted into the light, only slightly faded from the rush of the leap. He shook his hand haphazardly, running to the entryway of the Dizznee residence as color returned to his fingertips.
"Still there, Dizznee?"
"Still here."
Juline opened the door, raising an eyebrow at the empath before her. She turned away, too tired to deal with whatever Keefe was up to. She hadn't slept since the attack the day before, and it was taking a toll on her.
Bounding up to Dex's room, Keefe poked his head through the doorway.
"You didn't hang up!"
Dex half-smiled at Keefe's happiness, reminded of a golden retriever. The simplest things could make him grin.
Busying himself with Dex's projector, he found the Netflix feature, proudly showing off what he had learned a week ago. Cuddling up next to his boyfriend, Keefe started endlessly scrolling until he found a show that couldn't possibly be sad- a kids series about cat and ladybug superheroes.
He looked up at the Technopath, a question in his eyes.
"Just press play already."
Two episodes in, Keefe was a wreck.
"She loves him! And he loves her," Keefe sobbed. "But she only loves him when he's not showing his true self, and he only likes her when she's in spandex!"
"I don't think that's an accurate explanation of their dilemma," Dex mused. "Two heroes with secret identities- one person only likes the other as a civilian, whereas he only likes her as a hero."
"That's what I said!"
And Dex laughed. A real, actual, head-tossed-back laugh showing off his dimples and the adorable freckles splattered across his cheeks.
"I love you," Keefe whispered, nestling his head in Dex's chest.
Dex buried his face in Keefe's hair, eyes watering.
"I love you too," he murmured.
